Seth Meyers took aim at Donald Trump on Monday night, mocking the former president for getting booed at the World Cup final, his contradictory stance on Spain, and his claims about the Iran war. On his NBC show, Meyers highlighted the irony of Trump celebrating with the Spanish team after calling Spain a 'terrible partner' in NATO earlier this month.
Trump's awkward moment on stage
Meyers pointed out that Trump was not supposed to be on the podium with the Spanish team at MetLife Stadium. FIFA president Gianni Infantino attempted to guide Trump off stage, but Trump insisted on staying. 'The head of the most corrupt organization on Earth was, like, 'This is a bad look,'' Meyers joked. Spain's captain Rodri also tried to usher Trump away, prompting Meyers to quip: 'OK grandpa, time for bed!'
Booed by the crowd
Trump was met with boos and jeers as he stepped onto the field for the trophy presentation. Meyers speculated that Trump's staff might try to console him by saying the noise was just 'Mitch McConnell saying hello.' He added: 'I'm just kidding, Mitch McConnell is definitely alive. They always make you stay in the hospital an extra week after you put your jeans on.'
Trump's 'sports curse'
Meyers noted that Trump predicted an Argentina victory before the game, but Argentina lost. 'Trump's sports curse strikes again,' Meyers said. 'He goes to the NBA finals, the Knicks lose. He intervenes to get a red card overturned, USA loses. He says you can't bet against Messi, Argentina loses. He owned a USFL team, and the whole league folded. He's a sports reaper.'
Iran war confusion
Meyers also addressed Trump's repeated claims that the US has won the war in Iran, despite ongoing conflict. 'Obviously, the opposite is happening,' Meyers said. 'The Iran war only seems to be spiralling further out of control.' Trump has claimed 38 times that the war is over, but also said last week that Iran would be defeated soon, which Meyers called 'a weird thing to say about a country you claim has already been defeated.'
