Sally Field, the Oscar-winning actress, has expressed shock and amusement after learning that her co-star Lewis Pullman has never played any of The Legend of Zelda games. Field, 79, was introduced to the iconic Nintendo series by the late Robin Williams while they worked together on the 1993 comedy film Mrs. Doubtfire. She continues to play the games on her Nintendo Switch 2, often with her grandsons.
Field's Zelda Journey with Robin Williams
In a recent interview with Jake Hamilton for the Netflix film Remarkably Bright Creatures, Field recalled how Williams would regularly visit her trailer during the filming of Mrs. Doubtfire to play Zelda together. Although she did not specify which title, it was likely The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on the SNES, released in 1991. Williams, a well-known superfan of the series, even named his daughter Zelda and later promoted Ocarina of Time 3D with her in 2011.
Surprising Reaction to Co-Star's Confession
During the interview, Field turned to Pullman, 33, and asked if he had ever played any Zelda games. When he admitted he had not, she responded incredulously, 'What the hell is the matter with you?! It's so fun.' Pullman could only laugh and acknowledge that he was missing out. He also asked Field if she played on a computer, revealing a lack of awareness that the franchise is exclusive to Nintendo consoles.
Field, who owns a Nintendo Switch 2, said she continues to play the games even when her grandsons are not around, pretending they are there. The moment has delighted fans, especially given that Field, at 79, has more video game experience than Pullman, who grew up in the 1990s when consoles like the PlayStation and Nintendo 64 were popular.
Pullman's Own Gaming Connection
Although Pullman has never played Zelda, he has appeared in a video game: last year's Goodnight Universe, an indie puzzle game where he served as narrator. The game features a baby with psychic powers.
Nintendo's Upcoming Zelda Movie
Nintendo is preparing a live-action Zelda film, set for release in May 2027. Filming has wrapped, with Benjamin Evan Ainsworth cast as Link and Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda. Field's enthusiasm for the series has led fans to suggest she could appear in a cameo or future sequel. The film's cast remains relatively unknown compared to the Super Mario movies, but a major star may be cast as the villain Ganondorf.
