Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Unveils 2026 Inductees: A Star-Studded Lineup

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has revealed its highly anticipated list of inductees for 2026, featuring a diverse array of iconic artists from across the musical spectrum. Among the honorees are British rock legends Oasis, heavy metal pioneers Iron Maiden, soul-jazz sensation Sade, and soft rock icon Phil Collins. The announcement, made during an airing of American Idol in the United States, also includes first-time nominees Wu-Tang Clan and the late Luther Vandross, alongside other notable names such as Billy Idol, Queen Latifah, and Joy Division/New Order.

Eligibility and Voting Process

To qualify for induction, artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the nomination year. This year's selections were determined by a vote from over 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals, ensuring a comprehensive and respected evaluation of each nominee's impact on the music world.

Spotlight on Key Inductees

Phil Collins, already a Hall of Fame member as part of Genesis, adds to his legacy with solo hits like In the Air Tonight and One More Night. With eight Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year in 1985 for No Jacket Required, his influence spans decades. Sade, nominated previously in 2024, is celebrated for timeless tracks such as Smooth Operator and The Sweetest Taboo, blending soul and jazz into a unique sound.

Iron Maiden, a two-time nominee, played a pivotal role in the new wave of British heavy metal with albums like The Number of the Beast. Wu-Tang Clan revolutionized rap with their 1993 debut Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), hailed as a game-changer in the genre. The late Luther Vandross, who sold over 25 million albums and inspired artists like Kendrick Lamar and SZA, is honored posthumously for hits including Here and Now and Any Love.

Manchester Sound Takes Center Stage

This year's induction highlights the influential sound of Manchester, with post-punk pioneers Joy Division and New Order—sharing most members—joining Britpop's recently reunited Oasis. English artist Billy Idol also earns recognition for bringing a punk edge to pop with songs like White Wedding and Rebel Yell.

Special Category Honorees

Beyond the performer category, the Hall of Fame acknowledges contributions through three special awards. The Early Influence category honors Queen Latifah, Cuban singer Celia Cruz, Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, rapper MC Lyte, and country rocker Gram Parsons. The Musical Excellence category recognizes songwriter Linda Creed and producers Arif Mardin, Jimmy Miller, and Rick Rubin.

Additionally, more than 50 years after his death, Ed Sullivan, the legendary host of The Ed Sullivan Show, will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Non-Performer Award. His Sunday night program served as a launchpad for many musical icons in the 1950s and 1960s and helped break down racial barriers in American entertainment.

Induction Ceremony Details

The official induction ceremony is scheduled for November 14, 2026, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. While this year's list celebrates many, notable nominees who missed out include Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, INXS, Melissa Etheridge, Jeff Buckley, Pink, New Edition, and Shakira, underscoring the competitive nature of the selection process.
