Obsession Director Admits Major Plot Hole in Hit Horror

The horror movie Obsession has taken the world by storm, but even its director admits it has a significant flaw. Curry Barker, who helmed the film, has openly acknowledged a glaring plot hole that could impact any potential sequels.

The Plot Hole Revealed

In an interview with Total Film, Barker confessed that the concept of the One Wish Willow, a supernatural toy that grants a single wish when broken, creates logical inconsistencies. 'It's kind of a plot hole,' he said. 'It's something I don't like to think about too much, because it totally doesn't make sense that there's a world of people just making wishes.'

He elaborated: 'If the One Wish Willow actually works, which it does in this lore, and people are just making wishes left and right, there would be some crazy – like, dragons would exist. And none of that. The world is pretty normal from what we see in this movie. So, it doesn't really make sense.'

To rationalize the universe, Barker suggested that each wish might create an alternate reality, so not all wishes coexist in the same timeline. 'Here's my take; every time someone makes a wish, they enter into an alternate reality where their wish comes true, so you're not experiencing everybody's wish at the same time,' he explained.

Box Office Success and Critical Acclaim

Obsession (2025) has become an unprecedented box office smash since its cinematic release on May 16, grossing over $79 million worldwide. The story follows hopeless romantic Bear (Michael Johnston) and his childhood crush Nikki (Inde Navarrette). Bear uses a One Wish Willow to make Nikki fall in love with him, but the consequences are horrifying as he learns that winning her heart comes at a sinister price.

The film has earned rave reviews, securing a near-perfect 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and audiences. Critics have described it as a 'masterpiece' and 'genius,' with particular praise for Navarrette's performance. Dallas King of Flick Feast called her performance 'mind-blowing,' while Jeffrey M. Anderson of Common Sense Media highlighted the film's 'humanity, its shocks, and a star-making performance by Navarrette.'

Future Possibilities

Despite the plot hole, Barker is open to expanding the Obsession universe. He sees potential for a sequel or even an anthology series. 'Or even what really is exciting to me is maybe an anthology, like a one-hour episode. Each episode is a different wish that goes completely off the rails,' he teased. Barker mused that he could direct the pilot episode, then invite other filmmakers to 'give their spin at it.'

Obsession is now showing in cinemas.
