Channel 4's gripping two-part factual drama, Vengeance: Murder on the Heath, premieres tonight at 9pm, delving into a haunting crime that captivated the nation. Known as the 'honeytrap murder,' this shocking tale of young love and revenge is based on real events that continue to resonate.
The True Story Behind the Drama
Yes, Murder on the Heath is rooted in a true story. It recounts the 2011 murder of 21-year-old Gagandip Singh, a TV executive who was beaten and left to die in the boot of a car that was set ablaze in London. The case gained notoriety for the role of his friend Mundill Mahil, who lured him to her home.
According to a Channel 4 synopsis, the story explores a deadly love triangle when two friends fall for the same woman, leading to ill-conceived revenge that goes terribly wrong.
The Honeytrap Murder
Gagandip had a close friendship with Mundill, who alleged he attempted to assault her when he arrived unannounced at her home. She confided in Harinder 'Ravi' Shoker, and together they hatched a plan to confront Gagandip. After a vicious beating, he was placed in the boot of his sister's Mercedes, driven to Blackheath, and set on fire. A post-mortem revealed he was alive when the car ignited, dying from inhaling toxic fumes.
Mundill was not present during the attack but was described in court as 'manipulative, vengeful and deceitful,' as reported by the BBC.
Where Are They Now?
In 2012, Harinder Shoker received a life sentence for murder, with a minimum of 22 years. He is likely still in prison. Accomplice Darren Peters, 20, was jailed for 12 years for manslaughter, while Mundill Mahil received six years for grievous bodily harm with intent.
The drama draws from police interviews, text messages, court documents, and original interviews, offering a deep dive into the British Sikh community. Writer and director Aysha Rafaele, a British Asian filmmaker, noted, 'Everything about the shocking murder of Gagandip Singh was extraordinary. How young everyone involved was, and how vigilante justice backfired horrifically.'
Vengeance: Murder on the Heath airs tonight at 9pm on Channel 4.
