The closing lines, 'O Donal Davoren, poet and poltroon, poltroon and poet!' were delivered with such lacerating self-disgust that the audience was left in stunned silence. Pennington had a rare ability to convey profound inner turmoil with raw honesty.
A Unique Take on Richard II
In complete contrast, his interpretation of Shakespeare's Richard II offered a different kind of brilliance. He captured the king's irresponsibility through a smirking grin, as if chewing gum, a gesture that spoke volumes about the character's detachment from reality. It was a subtle yet powerful choice that highlighted Pennington's versatility.
Watching and listening to him was a privilege. His command of language and emotional range made every performance a masterclass in acting. He will be deeply missed by the theatre community and audiences alike.
