The Bank of Scotland has unveiled a limited-edition £20 banknote featuring an image inspired by Scott McTominay's iconic overhead kick. This special note celebrates Scotland's return to the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1998. A total of 100 notes have been printed, with 50 of them available to fans through a mix of collector auctions and a prize draw over the coming weeks.
Design and Inspiration
The design blends traditional banknote elements with imagery inspired by McTominay's World Cup qualifying goal for Scotland against Denmark. The goal, scored during a dramatic 4-2 victory at Hampden Park in Glasgow last November, secured Scotland's place in the men's World Cup after a 24-year absence. McTominay's overhead kick was the first goal of the match and has since become a memorable moment in Scottish football history.
McTominay's Reaction
Speaking about the honor, McTominay said: "Moments like that belong to everyone who follows the team, so seeing my goal featured on a Scottish banknote feels incredibly special. Being able to work with Bank of Scotland to turn it into something that also supports Crisis, and the work they do to tackle homelessness, makes me even more proud."
Bank of Scotland's Statement
Emma Noble, chair of the Scottish executive committee at the Bank of Scotland, commented: "Scott's overhead kick is already regarded as one of the nation's greatest ever goals. It's been a privilege to work with him to bring it to life in such a unique way."
How to Obtain the Notes
Fifty of the 100 limited-edition notes are available to the public. Fans can participate in an online auction or enter a prize draw. The auction is currently live and will run until 11:00 AM on Friday, 26 June. The prize draw also closes at the same time. Proceeds from the initiative will support Crisis Scotland, a charity dedicated to tackling homelessness.
This initiative not only celebrates a historic sporting achievement but also contributes to a worthy cause, making the banknote a meaningful collector's item for football fans and supporters of social causes alike.
