Jamie Oliver Joins CMAT in Music Video for 'The Jamie Oliver Petrol Station'
Jamie Oliver, the renowned TV chef, has made a surprising appearance in the music video for CMAT's indie pop song 'The Jamie Oliver Petrol Station.' The track, from CMAT's third album Euro-Country, explores themes of irrational hatred and misdirected anger, with lyrics inspired by the singer's reaction to seeing Oliver's face at a Shell petrol station selling his food products.
From Confusion to Collaboration
Initially, Oliver was puzzled upon hearing the song, wondering what he had done to prompt such a response. However, after his daughters and their friends expressed enthusiasm for the track, his perspective shifted. In February, Oliver followed CMAT on Instagram, leading to her invitation for him to participate in the video. He eagerly agreed, citing his respect for the creative arts and music industry.
The video was filmed at the new Leicester Square location of Jamie's Italian, Oliver's revived restaurant chain, just weeks before its grand reopening. The shoot occurred during a chaotic staff training week, with furniture still arriving and decorations incomplete. Despite the hectic environment, Oliver described the experience as enjoyable, emphasizing the importance of being able to laugh at oneself.
Video Premiere and Creative Elements
Debuted at CMAT's headlining show at London's Alexandra Palace, the video alternates between CMAT and her band performing in a 60s-style TV studio and Oliver navigating a stressful day in the restaurant kitchen. In a whimsical sequence, Oliver spots CMAT on a TV screen, leading to an escapist fantasy where she appears in his empty restaurant. The climax features Oliver drumming passionately, showcasing skills from his earlier days with the band Scarlet Division. CMAT praised his drumming abilities, noting he 'never lost it.'
Behind the Song and Future Prospects
CMAT, whose real name is Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, explained that the song is not a personal attack but a commentary on irrational emotions in a confusing world. Oliver, reflecting on the Shell sandwiches mentioned in the lyrics, stated he aimed to improve food options at petrol stations. He now understands the song's deeper meaning and hopes CMAT finds him less annoying. When asked about a potential collaboration, CMAT hinted that an invitation for Oliver's next festive special might be forthcoming.
Oliver also shared his current music tastes, including artists like Maro, Loyle Carner, Tom Misch, and MJ Cole, along with a fondness for the resurgence of Britpop. This collaboration highlights a unique intersection of food, music, and pop culture, blending humor and creativity in an unexpected partnership.
