After what feels like aeons, Good Omens finally returns this week for its third and final season. Well, it is more of a 90-minute special than a full season. Was the cult show's prophesied resurrection everything fans hoped it would be? No. It was not. In all honesty, Good Omens 3 is pretty disappointing for the most part, despite the efforts of those involved.
Plot Overview
Following the dramatic events of season two, the angel Aziraphale, played by Michael Sheen, is now running the show in Heaven as the host on high prepares for the second coming of Christ. Meanwhile, on the streets of Soho, the demon Crowley, portrayed by David Tennant, is living rough after his messy breakup with Aziraphale. When Heaven loses the new incarnation of the Messiah, Aziraphale is forced to reunite with Crowley to scour the Earthly plane looking for God's baby boy.
Rushed and Overstuffed
The series feels like an overstuffed mess, with too many plotlines crammed into a tight 90 minutes. It might have worked better as a six-episode season. The ideas are interesting but underbaked, and the pacing suffers. Additionally, the production looks disappointingly cheap, with fake-looking sets and empty streets that fail to capture the charm of the first season.
Performances Shine Despite Flaws
David Tennant and Michael Sheen deliver remarkable performances, and their chemistry is the highlight of the special. Whenever they share the screen, viewers remember what made the series special. Other cast members, including Derek Jacobi, Doon Mackichan, Liz Carr, and Gloria Obianyo, also give strong performances.
Behind-the-Scenes Issues
The controversy surrounding showrunner Neil Gaiman, who faced multiple allegations of sexual assault in 2024, led to his exit from the series. The decision to condense the season into a 90-minute special likely contributed to its rushed feel. There is a sense of obligation pervading the series, as if those involved were going through the motions to reach the end.
Final Verdict
Good Omens 3 fails to live up to its name. While the ending provides closure for Aziraphale and Crowley, it is not enough to save the series from damnation. The special is pretty rubbish for the most part, despite the ineffable efforts of the cast. Good Omens season 3 streams on Amazon Prime Video from May 13.
