Flea's Jazz Odyssey: From Bass to Trumpet in a Soulful Exploration
While many rock musicians might indulge in less savory pursuits during extensive global tours, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea chose a different path. During the band's worldwide tour from 2022 to 2024, he dedicated his time to mastering the trumpet, an instrument he first encountered in childhood before his career in funky rock took precedence. Now, at 63 years old, Flea's disciplined daily practice and open-minded approach have culminated in a profoundly meditative and groovy jazz journey.
Honora: A Star-Studded and Imaginative Project
Titled Honora in honor of a family member, this album assembles an impressive lineup of peers and luminaries from the Los Angeles jazz and experimental scenes. The collection features ten tracks that include original Flea-penned instrumentals, chanted mantras, and creative reinterpretations of classic songs. Flea not only showcases his musical versatility but also serves as a narrator on the spirited track A Plea, delivering a passionate call for sanity with the repeated mantra, "Live for peace! Live for love!" amidst global turmoil.
Innovative Reinterpretations and Collaborations
One of the standout moments on the album is Flea's beautiful and plaintive remake of Funkadelic's Maggot Brain, where he replaces Eddie Hazel's iconic guitar solo with his own trumpet performance. The project also boasts high-profile collaborations, including a dreamlike and elastic-grooved track Traffic Lights, co-written and sung by Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Flea's bandmate from Atoms for Peace. Additionally, Nick Cave delivers a rendition of Jimmy Webb's Wichita Lineman that aligns perfectly with expectations, adding depth to the album's diverse soundscape.
A Sincere and Exploratory Musical Venture
Despite the star power involved, Honora never feels dilettantish; instead, it is characterized by its sincerity, exploratory nature, and soulful execution. Tracks like Morning Cry are energized by the contributions of Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker and bassist Anna Butterss, creating a frisky and dynamic atmosphere. The minimalist dub groove of Frailed provides ample space for Flea's thoughtful trumpet playing to shine, while his interpretation of Frank Ocean's Thinkin Bout You over a bed of strings achieves a gorgeous and emotive effect.
Venturing Far from the Day Job
Although there are brief appearances from Red Hot Chili Peppers bandmates Chad Smith and John Frusciante, the true joy of Honora lies in hearing Flea step far outside his usual role. This album represents a bold and successful departure, highlighting his growth as a musician and his commitment to artistic exploration. It stands as a testament to the power of daily routine and an open spirit in creating something truly unique and resonant in the world of jazz and beyond.
