In Friday's episode of Emmerdale, Vinny Dingle (Bradley Johnson) opened up to Kev Barton (Chris Coghill) about his late wife, Liv Flaherty, during a walk where Vinny visits the spot where he spread her ashes. The emotional conversation comes nearly four years after Liv was killed off during the ITV soap's 50th anniversary episodes.
Who was Liv Flaherty?
Liv Flaherty was portrayed by actress Isobel Steele and first appeared in 2016 as Aaron Dingle's (Danny Miller) troublesome teenage half-sister. Her introduction came during a dark period for the family, as their father Gordon Livesy faced trial for sexually abusing Aaron as a child.
Initially, Liv struggled to accept the allegations against her father, but she ultimately supported Aaron by testifying in court. Following the trial, she moved in with Aaron and Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley), becoming a familiar presence in the village over the following years.
Major storylines and tragic death
During her time on the show, Liv tackled significant storylines, including coming out as asexual and battling alcoholism. In 2022, she married Vinny, but their happiness was short-lived as Liv died just months later.
In October 2022, a devastating storm hit the village, sending a caravan hurtling down Main Street where it struck Liv and pinned her against the shop. Paramedics determined that freeing her legs would cause her death, leaving no way to save her. In heartbreaking final scenes, she said goodbye to Aaron and Vinny before passing away.
Liv's ashes and Vinny's memory
During Friday's episode, Vinny revealed that most of Liv's ashes ended up on his face. When he, Mandy Dingle (Lisa Riley), and friends gathered to scatter her ashes in November 2022, Vinny became too emotional to deliver his speech. Frustrated, he pointed out that Liv wouldn't have wanted the ceremony to be so solemn, but the situation took a chaotic turn when his dog Chip jumped at the table.
Mandy attempted to rescue the urn but accidentally tipped the ashes all over Vinny as they fell backward. After a moment of shocked silence, Vinny began laughing, declaring it was the perfect send-off for Liv.
What is Isobel Steele doing now?
Since leaving the soap, Isobel Steele has focused on her music career, writing and performing under the artist name Little Dog Star. She recently released an EP called Something Infinite and is set to tour next month with sold-out shows in Manchester and London.
