In a startling revelation during a live performance, multi-talented artist Donald Glover shared that he experienced a significant health crisis last year, forcing the cancellation of his global tour.
A Shocking On-Stage Confession
While performing at Tyler, the Creator's Camp Flog Gnaw festival in Los Angeles on Saturday night, the 42-year-old entertainer disclosed to the audience that he had suffered a stroke during his recent world tour as Childish Gambino. The musician described experiencing severe head pain during a show in Louisiana, though he completed the performance despite vision problems.
Glover explained that when the tour reached Houston, he sought medical attention where doctors delivered the alarming diagnosis. "I went to the hospital and the doctor was like, 'You had a stroke,'" he told the captivated audience. The artist humorously noted that his first thought was about copying Jamie Foxx, who also suffered a stroke in 2023.
Multiple Health Complications Uncovered
The medical investigation revealed further concerning health issues. Doctors discovered Glover had a hole in his heart that required surgical intervention, along with a broken foot. The complex condition necessitated two separate operations, significantly extending his recovery period.
These serious health complications ultimately led to the complete cancellation of his remaining US tour dates, as well as all scheduled performances in the UK, Europe and Australia. Initially, Glover had described his condition as an "ailment" when first postponing shows.
Reflecting on Mortality and Career Transition
During his emotional address, Glover shared philosophical thoughts about his health scare. "They say everybody has two lives and the second life starts when you realise you have one," he reflected. "You got one life, guys, and I gotta be honest, the life I've lived with you guys has been such a blessing."
The health crisis coincided with Glover's planned retirement of his Childish Gambino stage name following the release of his final album, Bando Stone & the New World. The cancelled tour was intended as his farewell to the musical persona that earned him five Grammy awards.
