Dash Crofts of Seals and Crofts Dies at 85

The music world mourns the loss of Dash Crofts, the celebrated musician who co-founded the iconic soft rock duo Seals and Crofts. He passed away at the age of 85 due to complications following heart surgery, as confirmed by a family member. The news was announced on social media by the duo's longtime producer, Louie Shelton, who expressed deep sorrow and sent prayers to Crofts' family and fans.

A Defining Sound of the 1970s

In the 1970s, Seals and Crofts helped define the breezy, melodic sound that became known as yacht rock. Their 1972 album Summer Breeze reached the US top 10, featuring the hit title track and single Hummingbird. The song Summer Breeze became a radio staple and was covered by artists ranging from the Isley Brothers to the metal band Type O Negative, whose version appeared on the soundtrack of the 1990s teen thriller I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Continued Success and Controversy

The duo followed up with their 1973 album Diamond Girl, which was certified gold and spawned a single of the same name that peaked at number six on the US charts. However, they faced controversy in 1974 with the release of their album Unborn Child. The title track, reflecting their Bahá'í faith and belief that life begins at conception, sparked backlash and was banned by some radio stations in the wake of the Roe v Wade ruling.

Later Years and Legacy

Seals and Crofts disbanded in 1980 as their gentle musical style fell out of favor amid the rise of punk and disco. Crofts moved to Nashville, focusing on country music and occasionally releasing singles. After the breakup, the duo rarely appeared in public, except for a few Bahá'í gatherings. Crofts released the solo album Today in 1998, and the pair's final album, Traces, came out in 2004.

Crofts' musical partner, Jim Seals, died in 2022 at age 80. Recently, yacht rock has experienced a resurgence in appreciation, highlighted by the 2024 HBO documentary Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary, which argues for the genre's cultural importance. In a 2019 interview, comedian Bill Hader even praised Seals and Crofts, humorously comparing them to hardcore punk band Minor Threat.

Dash Crofts leaves behind a legacy of smooth, timeless music that continues to resonate with audiences, cementing his place in the annals of rock history.
