Asha Bhosle, Legendary Bollywood Singer, Dies at 92 After Eight-Decade Career

Asha Bhosle, one of India's most celebrated and prolific singers, has passed away at the age of 92. Her extraordinary career spanned over eight decades, during which she recorded an estimated 12,000 songs, making her a towering figure in Bollywood and global music.

A Voice That Defined Bollywood and Beyond

Bhosle first rose to fame as a playback singer, recording songs that actors lip-synced in Bollywood films. Though not on screen, her voice became more famous than many of the stars who mimed her performances. She also recorded extensively under her own name, building a reputation that extended from Asia to western audiences. Western listeners discovered her through the 1997 tribute song Brimful of Asha by Cornershop, and she later collaborated with diverse artists like Boy George, Kronos Quartet, and Gorillaz.

In 2002, she performed at London's Royal Albert Hall, described by the MC as "a living legend with over a billion fans." This was no exaggeration; Bhosle played a key role in the success of the Indian film industry, delivering some of Bollywood's most beloved songs, many composed by her second husband, RD Burman.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Born Ashalata in Goar, Sangli State (now Maharashtra), in 1933, she grew up in a musical household. Her father, Pandit Mangeshkar, was a singer and actor-manager, and her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, would become her only rival in the Bollywood playback scene. After her father's death when she was nine, the family moved to Bombay (now Mumbai), where Lata began working in film.

Despite stories of rivalry, the sisters sang together multiple times, with Asha emphasizing "blood is thicker than water." They were close in youth, with Lata famously refusing to attend school without baby Asha.

Personal Struggles and Professional Triumphs

Bhosle recorded her first song at age 10 in 1943 and later supported her mother through her singing. Her personal life faced challenges when she married Ganpatrao Bhosle at 16, against family wishes. The marriage involved abuse, and they separated in 1960, but she credited it with giving her three children.

Her career soared after meeting composer RD Burman in the mid-1950s. They collaborated on films like Teesri Manzil, with Burman introducing funk, jazz, and rock elements to Hindi film music. He helped Bhosle explore her vocal range, leading to iconic songs such as Phir Se Aaiyo Badra Bidesi and Khali Haath Shaam Aayi Hai. They married in 1980 and worked together until his death in 1994.

Global Recognition and Collaborations

Bhosle's global fame expanded with Cornershop's Brimful of Asha, remixed by Fatboy Slim to reach No. 1 in the UK charts. She eagerly experimented with western artists, recording with Boy George in 1991, Michael Stipe in 2002, and Kronos Quartet in 2005. Most recently, she collaborated with Gorillaz on their 2026 album The Mountain. Damon Albarn of Gorillaz called her voice his gateway to Bollywood.

Beyond music, Bhosle was known for her love of cooking and cricket. She launched the Asha's restaurant chain in Dubai in 2002, expanding across the Middle East and to Birmingham, UK. In 2007, she worked with Australian cricketer Brett Lee on a hit song in India.

Legacy and Final Years

Bhosle performed at packed venues like Wembley Arena multiple times, with her last live show in Dubai in 2024. She made her acting debut in the 2013 film Mai. Her daughter Varsha died in 2012, and her elder son Hemant in 2015. She is survived by her son Anand, who managed her career.

Asha Bhosle's legacy as a singer, actor, and businesswoman endures, marked by her versatility, from ghazals to pop, and her impact on millions worldwide.
