81-Year-Old Dev Releases ZX Spectrum Sequel After 40 Years

An 81-year-old developer has released a sequel to a classic UK video game from the 1980s, nearly 40 years after the original. Colin Porch, one of the original programmers of Head Over Heels, has finally completed the long-awaited follow-up, titled Return To Blacktooth: A Head Over Heels Adventure.

The Original Game

Head Over Heels is an isometric action-adventure game where players control two characters: a floating head and a head on a pair of legs, working together to solve puzzles. Originally released for home computers like the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, and later the Amiga, the game has endured through fan remakes, including versions on Steam and Nintendo Switch.

A 40-Year Journey

Porch began working on the sequel in 1989, shortly after the original game's release, but abandoned the project due to the rising popularity of game consoles. Decades later, at a reunion with former colleagues from developer Ocean Software, his old boss Gary Bracey encouraged him to finish it, citing the growing demand for retro games. Porch then spent years tracking down the rights holders to secure permission, eventually succeeding.

Release and Availability

The game is now available on itch.io for $12.99 (approximately £10), playable via an Amiga emulator or on original Amiga hardware. Indie publisher Thalamus Digital Publishing plans to release a physical version later this year. Porch handled design and programming, with assistance for music and Amiga hardware compatibility. Original creators John Ritman and Bernie Drummond are credited for their work on the first game but were not involved in the sequel.
