Chad Gilbert, guitarist and co-founder of the rock band New Found Glory, has died at the age of 45. His wife, singer Lisa Cimorelli, 33, and his bandmates confirmed that Gilbert passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of September 20, surrounded by family.
Gilbert was diagnosed with a rare adrenal gland cancer in 2021, which later progressed to an aggressive stage 4 adrenocortical carcinoma. His death was announced through heartfelt statements shared on social media, expressing devastation and gratitude for the peaceful manner of his passing.
Wife and bandmates pay tribute
Cimorelli, who married Gilbert in 2020, wrote: 'He left this world surrounded by friends and family and took his final breaths with his wife and mother by his side, just as he wished.' She added: 'We are devastated and shocked by how quickly he left us, yet so grateful for how peacefully and smoothly he went.'
The statement highlighted the outpouring of support, noting: 'The amount of visitors that crowded the hospital lobby at a moment's notice is a testament to how beloved and cherished Chad was, and always will be.' Gilbert was remembered as a 'legendary musician' whose 'biggest dreams came true', with his 'favourite accomplishment' being his role as a husband and father.
His bandmates paid tribute to his enduring influence, stating: 'Chad's guitar playing, songwriting, humour, and relentless drive helped shape New Found Glory for nearly three decades.' They added: 'Through more than a dozen albums, endless tours around the world, and more accolades than we ever could have imagined, Chad challenged all of us to grow as musicians, performers, and human beings.'
Cancer battle and musical legacy
Gilbert first revealed his cancer diagnosis in December 2021, after undergoing emergency surgery to remove a rare cancerous tumour following being found unresponsive in bed. In August 2022, he reported that another tumour had been found in his spine, requiring urgent surgery. The following February, he announced he was undergoing intense chemotherapy for rare pheochromocytomas discovered in his lungs and back.
His health struggles continued this year, when he needed brain surgery after three more tumours were discovered. In April, he confirmed that his diagnosis had changed and was now stage 4.
Beyond his work with New Found Glory, Gilbert was the lead vocalist for the band's side project International Superheroes of Hardcore and had two stints as lead vocalist for Shai Hulud. He also worked as a producer and released solo material.
Personal life and tributes
Gilbert is survived by his wife Lisa, his five-year-old daughter Lily, his mother Jackie, and his brother Brian. Prior to marrying Cimorelli, Gilbert was in a nearly decade-long relationship with Paramore singer Hayley Williams, 37. They began dating in 2008, married in 2016, and divorced in 2017. Williams later spoke about the impact of the split on her mental health, and in her song 'Dead Horse' she admitted feeling 'guilty' over being 'the other woman' when they got together.
Fans and fellow musicians have been paying tribute, hailing Gilbert as a 'pioneer in pop punk'. His bandmates declared: 'His influence will always be part of New Found Glory and his spirit will be felt on every stage we stand on, with every note we play.'
