Hayden Panettiere obituary: Heroes and Nashville star dies at 36

Hayden Panettiere, the actor who gained international fame as the regenerative cheerleader Claire Bennet in the TV series Heroes, has died suddenly at the age of 36. Her death was confirmed in an obituary that highlighted her career from child star to leading roles in the Scream franchise and the musical drama Nashville.

Early Life and Breakthrough in Heroes

Born on 21 August 1989 in Palisades, Rockland County, north of New York, Hayden was the daughter of Lesley Vogel, an actor, and Skip (Alan) Panettiere, a firefighter. At her mother's urging, she appeared in a Playskool commercial at just 11 months old, and at age four made her acting debut as Sarah Roberts in the daytime soap One Life to Live (1994-97). She then played Lizzie Spaulding in The Guiding Light (1996-2000), earning a special award from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for her portrayal of a child with illness. Reflecting on that role, she recalled: "I was kidnapped, I had cancer, I was thrown down a well, I was in a car accident, the cancer came back and then it went away again. I was all but killed."

At 17, Panettiere landed the role that made her a global star: Claire Bennet in Heroes (2006-2010). The show, described in the US as television's "coolest" new series, featured an ensemble cast, but Claire was central to the first season. The plot began with Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka) travelling from the future to warn Peter Petrelli (Milo Ventimiglia) that Claire's survival is critical to humanity, telling him: "Save the cheerleader, save the world." Claire's power of rapid cellular regeneration allowed her to heal from injuries like wounds, broken bones, and burns. One critic noted she was like "Wolverine from the X-Men – minus the claw." Panettiere said of her character: "I love how she's a normal girl. I think she's sassy and I think she's a spitfire and she's really smart. And I think that's one of the reasons they sort of made her a cheerleader – to give her that very human look."

From Scream to Nashville and Personal Struggles

After Heroes, Panettiere appeared in Scream 4 (2011) as Kirby Reed, a high-school senior and horror film enthusiast who becomes a target of the Ghostface killer. Her character's fate was left ambiguous after being stabbed, allowing her return in Scream VI (2023) as an FBI agent investigating new murders. Another notable role was in Nashville (2012-18), where she played Juliette Barnes, a rising country singer challenging the established queen, Rayna Jaymes (Connie Britton). Juliette's tough exterior concealed a troubled past, including a drug-addicted mother and struggles with drink and drugs after becoming a mother to her daughter Cadence.

Panettiere later said she related to Juliette because of her own battles with opioid and alcohol addiction and postnatal depression. In 2022, she told People magazine she had spent eight months in rehab over the previous year. She remarked, "I was on top of the world and I ruined it," and explained her troubles began at 15 when she was given "happy pills" to be "peppy during interviews" on red carpets. "Things kept getting out of control and, as I got older, the drugs and alcohol became something I almost couldn't live without." She also spoke about depression after the birth of her daughter Kaya in 2014, her split from Ukrainian boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko, and giving up full custody of Kaya to him four years later.

Other Roles and Later Career

Panettiere's early career included voicing the ant Dot in A Bug's Life (1998), playing a daughter in Remember the Titans (2000), and appearing in Ally McBeal (2002) as Maddie Harrington. She had guest roles in Malcolm in the Middle (2003-05) as the manipulative Jessica, voiced a zebra in Racing Stripes (2005), and starred in Tiger Cruise (2004) as a Navy brat aboard the USS Constellation. She played the title role in I Love You, Beth Cooper (2009) and portrayed Amanda Knox in the TV movie Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy (2011). In the thriller Sleepwalker, released at the start of 2026, she starred as a grieving mother.

In her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, she wrote about her struggles: "The fact that I wasn't with Kaya, was officially an addict, and no longer had the will to work was killing me. I'd done this all to myself and it filled me with disgust." She had been rebuilding her career since 2023. Panettiere is survived by her parents and daughter. Her brother, Jansen, an actor, died in 2023 of a heart problem at age 28. Her sudden death at 36 marks the end of a career that touched millions, leaving a legacy of memorable characters and a candid account of personal challenges.
