Apple's new 27-inch Studio Display XDR is its best monitor yet, boasting an exceptionally bright and gorgeous 5K screen designed for Mac-using content creators, with a price tag to match.
Design and Features
The Studio Display XDR features a sleek aluminum body with a black glass front and a uniform bezel. The optional height- and tilt-adjustable stand is minimalistic, but cannot be removed after purchase unless configured with a VESA mount. Unique features include a six-speaker system, three microphones, a 12MP webcam with Apple's Center Stage and Desk View, and a hub with two Thunderbolt 5 ports and two USB-C ports capable of charging a laptop up to 140W. The display is powered by the A19 Pro chip from the latest iPhone, with inaudible fans for cooling.
Display Performance
The 27-inch 5K IPS LCD screen uses miniLED backlight technology with 2,304 dimming zones, delivering a peak brightness of 2,000 nits for HDR content and 1,000 nits for everyday use. It offers wide viewing angles, vivid colors, and excellent contrast with minimal blooming. The display is factory-calibrated for color accuracy, covering P3 and Adobe RGB gamuts, and includes various color reference modes for professional work. The adaptive 120Hz refresh rate ensures smooth scrolling and video playback.
Compatibility and Connectivity
The Studio Display XDR works with modern Macs and iPads with M-series chips, requiring an M4 chip or better for 120Hz operation. It can be daisy-chained via Thunderbolt and supports some PCs with Thunderbolt 4 or 5, but features may be limited. The display is not compatible with games consoles.
Pricing and Verdict
The Studio Display XDR starts at £2,599 (€3,099/$2,899/A$4,799), with nano-texture glass adding £300. It is a significant upgrade over the standard Studio Display and offers pro-level features for content creators. While expensive, it provides a plug-and-play solution with exceptional brightness, color accuracy, and built-in speakers, mics, and webcam. It is a viable alternative to reference monitors costing up to £30,000, but may not suit all users due to its high price and limited PC compatibility.
