In 2003, David Kemp took his exhibition Uncertain Instruments to the Lowry in Salford. The installation included a line of dancing frogs and a violin, inspired by Luigi Galvani's late 18th-century discovery of animal electricity.
Installation challenges and playful spirit
Bill, one of the technicians who installed the exhibition, recalled a challenging week enlivened by Kemp's playful strangeness and flagrant disregard for health and safety. On the last day, Kemp gave all the techies a copy of his book Things Reconstructed. Bill's copy was inscribed 'to Bill, who knows how to make things properly'.
Legacy of a unique artist
Kemp's work often combined mechanical and biological elements, reflecting his fascination with the intersection of art and science. His exhibitions were known for their whimsical and thought-provoking nature.
