Crystal Palace's Lorenzo restaurant to close after 41 years
Lorenzo restaurant in Crystal Palace closing after 41 years

Lorenzo, the family-run Italian restaurant on Westow Hill in Crystal Palace, will serve its final meal on November 22, ending a 41-year run that began in 1985. The owners announced the closure in a statement on the restaurant's website, citing rising operating costs and financial pressures as the primary reasons.

A legacy of family celebrations since 1985

In a statement, the trattoria said the announcement comes with "great sadness" and "heartbreak," as continuing to operate had become "increasingly difficult." The restaurant has been a fixture in the community since 1985, hosting countless birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, and family celebrations over the decades.

"Since opening in 1985, Lorenzo has been so much more than just a restaurant. It has been our family's life, a place where generations of families and friends have come together to enjoy good food, celebrate special occasions and create lasting memories," the statement read.

"Over the years, we have had the privilege of being part of countless birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and family celebrations. We have watched children grow up, return with families of their own, and become familiar faces around our tables."

Rising costs and financial pressures cited

The owners pointed to broader challenges facing the hospitality industry. "Sadly, the hospitality industry has faced increasingly difficult times. Rising operating costs, financial pressures and the changing challenges of running an independent restaurant have made it increasingly difficult for businesses like ours to continue," the statement continued.

"Despite our family's dedication and determination, these pressures have ultimately led us to make the heartbreaking decision to close."

Founder Lorenzo Nargi, who turns 88 in November, has devoted much of his life to the three-storey restaurant. The family also wants him to enjoy a slower pace, according to the statement.

Community reaction and gentrification concerns

News of the closure has upset loyal diners, with social media flooded with memories and appreciation. One person said: "The saddest news. Our all time Crystal Palace favourite. Nothing quite matches you." Another wrote: "We will miss you so much. We have been visiting your beautiful restaurant since I was a baby," while a third added: "The best of the best!"

Other Crystal Palace locals raised concerns about gentrification in The Triangle, a popular stretch made up of Church Road, Westow Hill, and Westow Street. Once known for its independent businesses, there are concerns chains are pushing long-running shops and restaurants out.

One commenter said: "This is what happens with gentrification! First we get a Gail's where their food and drinks are an overpriced mess and then the Nando's, and it continues until the whole street is just full of chain restaurants." A second person said: "We need independents who put out quality. There's just no investment in local businesses anymore."

The restaurant thanked its customers of past and present, many of whom have become real friends. The team hopes to see "as many familiar faces as possible" in the final weeks before closing.
