Cardamom and Lemon Gimlet Recipe for Summer

Gimlets may be small, but they pack a punch. This spicy, citrus-forward example from Empire Empire in London is no exception, making a gloriously summery aperitif.

Cardamom and Lemon (or Lime) Gimlet

This recipe serves one and uses dry gin, fresh citrus juice, runny honey, and cardamom. Harneet Baweja, owner of Empire Empire, shares the method.

Ingredients

  • 50ml dry gin (Bombay Sapphire recommended)
  • 25ml fresh lemon juice or lime juice (lime adds bitterness)
  • 15ml runny honey
  • 2-3 crushed green cardamom pods or 1 pinch green cardamom powder
  • 1 twist lemon or lime peel for garnish (optional)

Method

Chill a gimlet glass or coupe in the freezer. Combine all ingredients in a shaker filled with ice. Shake hard for 10 seconds to chill and dilute. Strain into the chilled glass. Optionally, add a fresh ice cube. Garnish by squeezing a citrus twist over the top and dropping it in.

Harneet Baweja notes that this drink works well with either lemon or lime, with lime adding a nice touch of bitterness. The cardamom provides a gentle spice that complements the citrus.
