Café Pacifico, a Covent Garden restaurant that has served Mexican food since 1982 and is considered one of the UK's oldest establishments of its kind, faces an uncertain future after liquidators were appointed to its last known operating company.
According to Restaurant Online, liquidators have been appointed to Laverlathe Limited, which remains named on the Langley Street restaurant's website as its operator. The publication reports that Laverlathe was "compulsorily wound up in March following a petition filed last November."
Uncertainty Over Restaurant's Operations
Restaurant Online adds: "It is not currently clear whether the business has been sold to a new operator or is continuing to trade under the control of the liquidators." This leaves the status of the restaurant, which has been a staple of the London dining scene for over four decades, unclear.
Café Pacifico describes itself as "a fixture of the London Mexican restaurant scene. Being the first of its kind, it first introduced Mexican food, tequila and culture to the UK." The restaurant's menu includes nachos, quesadillas, crispy empanadas, burritos, tacos and fajitas, as well as sweet adobo pork ribs with pineapple honey glaze.
Related Restaurants and Future Outlook
The restaurant previously operated a sister establishment, La Perla, on nearby Maiden Lane. According to Restaurant Online, Café Pacifico continues to be linked to Primos Mexican Cantina on Blackstock Road in Finsbury Park. However, that restaurant is operated via a different holding company to Laverlathe, suggesting it is not directly affected by the liquidation.
The appointment of liquidators marks a significant development for a restaurant that has been a pioneer in introducing Mexican cuisine to the UK. The outcome for Café Pacifico's operations remains to be seen, with no confirmation yet on whether a new operator has taken over or if the restaurant will continue trading under the liquidators' control.
