Val Kilmer Set for AI-Powered Resurrection in Upcoming Historical Drama
The late Hollywood icon Val Kilmer, who passed away last year at age 65, is poised to make a groundbreaking posthumous return to the silver screen. Kilmer will be resurrected using advanced generative artificial intelligence technology to star in the new drama As Deep As the Grave, a project he was attached to prior to his death from throat cancer.
Family and Estate Back AI Resurrection Project
Director and writer Coerte Voorhees is collaborating closely with Kilmer's estate and his daughter Mercedes to bring the actor back to life through state-of-the-art AI. In an exclusive interview with Variety, Voorhees revealed that Kilmer's son Jack, an actor who starred in 2018's Lord of Chaos, also fully supports this innovative cinematic endeavor.
"His family kept emphasizing how important they believed this movie was and that Val genuinely wanted to participate," Voorhees told the publication. "He truly considered this an important story that he wanted his name associated with... Despite potential controversy, this is exactly what Val desired."
Role Tailored to Kilmer's Heritage and Advocacy
Kilmer will portray Father Fintan, a complex character who serves as both a Native American spiritualist and Catholic priest. Voorhees specifically designed this role around Kilmer, who was a well-known advocate for Native American rights and claimed Cherokee heritage throughout his life.
"He was absolutely the actor I envisioned for this role," Voorhees explained. "The character draws directly upon his Native American heritage and his deep connections to, and affection for, the American southwest." Unfortunately, Kilmer was unable to physically appear on set due to his ongoing battle with throat cancer.
Film Details and Supporting Cast
As Deep As the Grave, previously titled Canyon Del Muerto, has been in development since 2023. The film is based on the true story of archaeologists Ann and Earl Morris, who worked alongside the Navajo people during the 1920s to uncover North America's earliest civilization, the Ancestral Puebloan.
The production features an impressive supporting cast including:
- Tom Felton (known for the Harry Potter franchise) as Earl Morris
- Bafta award winner Abigail Lawrie as Ann Morris
- Oscar-winning actor Wes Studi
- Actor Jacob Fortune-Lloyd
AI Implementation and Hollywood Trends
Voorhees confirmed that the AI-generated version of Kilmer will appear in a "significant" portion of the film. The production team will utilize images of the actor captured throughout his entire life to authentically recreate Kilmer across different decades.
This project represents the latest development in Hollywood's growing embrace of artificial intelligence technology. In 2024, Brady Corbet's Oscar-winning epic The Brutalist employed AI to refine actor Adrien Brody's Hungarian accent. Additionally, last year saw major stars Matthew McConaughey and Michael Caine sign agreements with startup ElevenLabs, permitting the company to create AI versions of their distinctive voices.
The 2021 documentary Val previously chronicled Kilmer's life through extensive archive footage, featuring voiceover narration provided by his son. This new AI resurrection marks another chapter in preserving and continuing the legacy of one of Hollywood's most memorable talents.
