Photos of the day: Sheep, protests, and a giant dachshund

The Guardian's picture editors have selected a series of photographs from around the world for Tuesday, capturing moments from a major sheep auction in Scotland to political celebrations in Zambia and a giant dachshund installation in Shanghai.

Scotland's Largest Sheep Sales

An aerial view shows sheep for sale at one of Europe's largest store lamb auctions in Lairg, Scotland. The annual Lairg sheep market is one of the biggest one-day sales of hill sheep in Europe, with as many as 20,000 sheep from the northern Highlands sold at auction in previous years. The photographs also capture hill ewes and wedder lambs at the market, highlighting the scale of the event.

Political Celebrations and Protests

In Lusaka, Zambia, supporters of president-elect Hakainde Hichilema celebrated his reelection for a second term. The 64-year-old, credited with restructuring the country's debt and making schooling free, won with around 60% of the vote. Meanwhile, in Jakarta, Indonesia, university students jostled with police officers during a protest against government policies, including state budget spending, the free meals programme and expanded military roles in civilian affairs.

In Kyiv, Ukraine, an honour guard held a portrait of Col Yevhen Konovalets beside his grave during a reburial ceremony at the national military memorial cemetery. Konovalets, a military commander and leader of the Ukrainian nationalist movement, was assassinated in Rotterdam in 1938, and his remains have been repatriated from the Netherlands after 88 years.

International Diplomacy and Restoration

In Moscow, Russia, Japan's ambassador to Russia, Akira Muto, left the Russian foreign ministry after a tit-for-tat summoning by Tokyo and Moscow, sparked by Putin's visit to Iturup, a disputed island known in Japan as Etorofu. In Washington DC, US, the renovated Arts of War statues, newly covered in gold leaf, were seen at Arlington Memorial Bridge near the Lincoln Memorial. The Trump administration has ordered a $5.1m restoration project to regild the two Arts of War statues, along with the nearby Arts of Peace companion statues. The four statues are being restored under a project overseen by the US Department of the Interior.

Culture and Fashion

In Auckland, New Zealand, a look card was captured backstage ahead of the twenty-seven names show at New Zealand fashion week. In London, England, artist Clare Twomey appeared at the press preview of the War Child x Secret 7” exhibition at 180 Studios, where 700 sleeves will be auctioned to raise money for children affected by war. In Shanghai, China, tourists visited a giant 13-metre-long dachshund installation at the Haus Nowhere store on Huaihai Middle Road. These images reflect a diverse range of events and activities, from cultural showcases to political and environmental incidents.
