Peaky Blinders Star Addresses Absence from Highly Anticipated Film

Paul Anderson, the acclaimed actor who portrayed Arthur Shelby throughout all six seasons of the hit BBC series Peaky Blinders, has publicly addressed his notable absence from the franchise's new Netflix feature film, The Immortal Man. The film, which premiered in UK cinemas this month, sees Cillian Murphy reprising his iconic role as Tommy Shelby, but without Anderson's character alongside him.

The Immortal Man Proceeds Without Arthur Shelby

Set years after the conclusion of season six, The Immortal Man finds a self-exiled Tommy Shelby returning to his Birmingham roots when a new threat emerges. Once again donning his signature flat cap and navigating a war-torn landscape, Tommy must confront his legacy to protect the Shelby clan. While Murphy's return has generated significant excitement, fans have been left wondering about the fate of Arthur Shelby, Tommy's volatile older brother.

In an exclusive interview with LADBible, Anderson responded to questions about his character's exclusion with characteristic candor. "Well, what can you do, eh? It is how it is. I thought I'd just leave them to it," the 48-year-old actor stated. Despite Arthur's physical absence from the film, Anderson confirmed that his character's shadow looms large over the narrative, playing a crucial role in Tommy's emotional journey throughout the story.

No Hard Feelings Toward the Franchise

Anderson expressed no resentment toward the film's production team or series creator Stephen Knight, describing The Immortal Man as "great" and praising it as "such a powerful thing to do" that represents content rarely seen on television. When pressed about whether this marks the definitive end for Arthur Shelby, Anderson offered a measured response: "I mean, yeah, I guess so... It's not as straightforward as you think. But we'll see."

The actor revealed that discussions are already underway for a new Peaky Blinders series focusing on a younger generation of the gang. "They plan to do another two seasons, but I don't know if he wants to do it with a younger generation or a new team of Peaky Blinders," Anderson added, leaving the door open for potential future involvement while acknowledging the franchise's evolving direction.

Anderson's Career and Personal Challenges

Since Peaky Blinders concluded its television run in 2022, Anderson has maintained an active career, appearing in the 2024 Kevin Hart action-comedy Lift and securing a role in eight episodes of the Western series The Grey House. However, the intervening years have also brought personal challenges for the actor.

In January 2024, Anderson pleaded guilty to possession of crack cocaine, and the following month, he sparked concern among fans after being photographed looking drawn and disheveled during an outing in London. The actor quickly addressed these concerns through social media, attributing his appearance to a severe bout of flu and reassuring followers with the message: "Thank you for all your love and concern to everyone. I was and have been absolutely flattened by the flu."

A Message of Resilience and Support

Months later, Anderson shared a heartfelt video with his followers, discussing his personal struggles and offering words of encouragement. "Just like you, search inside, find it for yourself, overcome the struggles, the tribulations, the pain that you are feeling," he advised. "Because there is no story without struggle."

The actor emphasized the importance of mutual support, stating: "Take it from me, I have struggled, and I struggle today, the same way you do, and we deal with it. If I can help you deal with your struggles, then let's do it together, let's make this the first of many conversations, because you can't do it on your own, you need help."

Anderson concluded with a powerful message about the healing power of helping others: "And I will say this one more thing to you, you can help others, in turn, it will help you. It's called service. So, turnaround my friend, look for somebody else who also is suffering, and hard as you may find it, help them, because you'll find it helps you more, believe it or not." He finished with an affirmation: "Remember this, we are amazing. You are unbelievable."

The Immortal Man represents both a continuation and evolution of the Peaky Blinders saga, with Anderson's absence marking a significant shift in the franchise's dynamic. As the series potentially moves toward focusing on new generations, Anderson's contributions to the show's legacy remain undeniable, even as he navigates his own path forward both professionally and personally.
