Nicole Kidman has given fans a rare glimpse into two of her most high-profile relationships, revealing stark differences between her marriages to Tom Cruise and Keith Urban. In an interview with British Vogue, the 59-year-old Oscar-winning actor discussed how her early marriage to Cruise at age 22 shaped her career, and how her later relationship with Urban was marked by a more feeling-centered approach.
Early Marriage to Tom Cruise
Kidman was married to Cruise from 1990 to 2001, and the couple adopted two children, Isabella and Connor. Reflecting on that time, she said: 'You have to remember literally, because of who I married at such a young age, I was thrust into it since I was 22. I got married so young. Suddenly I was 22, 23 years old and I had this huge movie star husband. But it just seemed completely natural. We just fell madly in love and it was that simple.'
Despite warnings that the marriage could harm her career, Kidman said she was unfazed. 'I'm like, "I don't care. I'm in love. I want to be married." And then I was his wife and they were like, "See, we told you." I'm like, "So what? I wasn't meant to marry the man I love? Of course I'll throw my career away. I don't care."'
Later Marriage to Keith Urban
After her split from Cruise, Kidman met musician Keith Urban in 2005 in Los Angeles, and they married a year later in Sydney, Australia. The couple welcomed two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret, and were considered one of Hollywood's power couples. However, in September 2025, Kidman announced their separation and filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences, despite reportedly not wanting the split.
Speaking about the end of nearly 20 years of marriage, Kidman told British Vogue she was 'very fearful and deeply vulnerable.' She attributed this to her 'feelings first' approach: 'I've approached my whole life like that. That's just who I am. I don't overthink things and I'm probably not that analytical. I'm far more feeling-centred and I lead with my heart. I just go, "OK, what do I feel here? I'll give it a go." It throws people, because I think they think I'll be far more measured and I'm not.'
Embracing Uncertainty and Hope
Kidman acknowledged that she can 'still approach things intellectually,' but her 'desire is not to be ruled by [her] head.' Seemingly referencing her past relationships, she added: 'I've always wanted to live a well-examined life…Trying things, making mistakes, failing, getting back up, moving on, embracing love, staying open, keeping the heart open and the possibilities.'
She admitted that the past year has not been easy, but she has learned to adapt. 'But at the same time I'm like, "OK, I didn't expect this." I had a different view of what my life was going to be, but this is what it is now. You make all these plans and you have all these ideas of what it's all going to be like and then it's… not. You have to adjust. You adapt.'
Kidman concluded that her future is 'completely unknown' and 'strange,' but she is choosing to move forward with hope: 'I can either really not confront it and just curl up, or I can just go forward with an enormous amount of hope.'
