Minions & Monsters director Pierre Coffin has addressed a viral theory suggesting that a character in the film shouted the name of OnlyFans creator Bonnie Blue. The confusion arose from a World Cup-themed promotional clip in which a Minion named Stuart appeared to say 'Bonnie Blue' during a football match against movie monsters.
How the theory started
The clip, shared widely on social media, showed the Minions playing football. Viewers believed that Stuart responded to a call for Dua Lipa or Sabrina Carpenter by shouting 'Bonnie Blue'. Given that Minions speak a language known as Minionese—described by Coffin as roughly 40% gibberish, 30% random words, and 30% funny sounds—the claim seemed plausible to many.
Director investigates
Coffin, who has voiced the Minions since Despicable Me, told The Movie Dweeb on TikTok that he was baffled by the theory. 'Apparently I'm saying this other person's name,' he said. 'I'm bringing it up because I said, “Am I saying that?” So I went back to them because I didn't know that person.' After reviewing the original recordings, Coffin confirmed the internet had misheard the line.
What the Minion actually said
The sound in question was not a reference to Bonnie Blue but part of the surname of animator Omid Rajabalipour. Coffin explained that viewers mistook the 'balipour' portion for 'Bonnie Blue'. 'I didn't say that at all,' he added. 'People hear that other person's name, which is very strange.'
Minionese and mishearings
Coffin invented Minionese by mixing fragments of different languages, nonsense syllables, and amusing sounds. This creative freedom often leads to audiences interpreting words that aren't actually there, making the Bonnie Blue theory a classic example of auditory pareidolia.
About Minions & Monsters
The latest installment, set in 1920s Hollywood, follows the Minions as they attempt to make their own monster movie. The voice cast includes Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, Bobby Moynihan, Phil LaMarr, Trey Parker, and even Star Wars creator George Lucas.
Despite the viral theory, Coffin confirmed that Bonnie Blue is not referenced in the film, reassuring parents who may have been concerned about inappropriate content in a children's movie.
