Actress Martine McCutcheon has brought a beloved cinematic moment to life, stepping into a real-life festive reunion at a UK airport. The star, famous for her role in the Christmas classic Love Actually, became part of a special welcoming committee at London's Stansted Airport on 4th December 2025.

A Heartwarming Airport Welcome

Dressed in a cosy jumper and a maroon jacket, McCutcheon witnessed the emotional moment as friends and family arrived from across the globe. The initiative, created by Costa Coffee, aimed to bring festive cheer to travellers and celebrate seasonal connections. McCutcheon handed out warm drinks while a gospel choir performed uplifting carols in the arrivals hall, adding a magical soundtrack to the reunions.

Speaking about the experience, Martine McCutcheon said: "I've loved spreading a little festive cheer today. Watching people light up the moment they see someone they’ve missed is truly magical." She added, "There’s a real sense of anticipation and gratitude in those first reunions that feels so unique to this time of year. It’s been a joy to witness those memories being made right in front of us."

Research Highlights the Power of Connection

The brand commissioned research of 5,000 adults who celebrate Christmas, uncovering powerful insights into the nation's festive spirit. The study found that nearly half (47%) said spending time with loved ones boosts their seasonal mood. A significant 86% agreed the holidays are a perfect opportunity to catch up with those they care about most.

The research also pinpointed the nation's favourite Christmas rituals for connecting with others:

  • Winter walks (39%)
  • Watching festive films (40%)
  • Meeting in coffee shops (27%)

Classic films form a core part of traditions, with Home Alone (44%), Elf (30%), and Love Actually (24%) being watched annually without fail.

The Festive Journey to Loved Ones

Travel plays a huge role in these seasonal gatherings. The study revealed that almost half (49%) travel to see loved ones, covering an average distance of 164 miles. The majority (82%) make the journey by car, while others take trains (23%) or fly (14%).

For those travelling, festive playlists are the perfect companion for 45% of people, while 39% would want a hot drink for the journey. When it comes to getting into the Christmas spirit, favourite food and drink includes:

  • Mince pies (43%)
  • Mulled wine (26%)
  • Seasonal hot drinks (23%)

Ultimately, the research confirmed that for more than six in 10 (61%) of those polled, Christmas is more about connection than celebration.

A Costa Coffee spokesperson concluded: "The joy of the season is in those first moments of reunion, when the people we’ve missed most finally come together. Whether it’s a shared smile at arrivals or a quiet coffee together, these connections create lasting memories."
