Gaynor Faye Unveils Shocking Emmerdale Romance That Almost Transformed the Show
In a candid interview with Zingo Bingo, Gaynor Faye, the actress behind Emmerdale's formidable Megan Macey, has revealed a groundbreaking romantic storyline that was nearly introduced on the hit ITV soap. The plot would have seen Megan embark on an unexpected relationship with Harriet Finch, portrayed by Katherine Dow Blighton, adding a fresh layer of complexity to the show's narrative landscape.
From Corrie to Emmerdale: A Tailor-Made Role
Gaynor Faye's journey to Emmerdale was serendipitous. Initially auditioning for a different part, producers crafted the character of Megan specifically for her, making her the sister of Jason Merrell and placing her in the iconic Home Farm. "This role came up because the producer at the time created it for me," Gaynor shared. "It was lovely because I went into Home Farm as a businesswoman, with all these amazing outfits, straight in as a bit of a baddie."
Her tenure on the show was marked by intense drama, including a bitter feud with Charity Dingle, played by Emma Atkins. "That was great fun," Gaynor recalled. "I poured paint over her head, we had all sorts of fights, and punches in the ballpark—it was just really good fun."
The Almost Romance: Megan and Harriet's Untold Story
The most startling revelation from the interview was the discussion of a potential romantic arc between Megan and Harriet Finch. "There was talk of me and another character having a relationship, me and Harriet," Gaynor disclosed. She emphasized that such a storyline wouldn't have been about a sudden shift in sexuality but rather about falling in love organically. "It would be good to see more storylines like that," she added, highlighting the need for diverse and authentic representations in soaps.
This plot, if realized, would have challenged traditional soap opera tropes and offered viewers a nuanced portrayal of love, potentially resonating deeply with audiences seeking more inclusive narratives.
Reflections on Soap Opera Evolution and Balance
Gaynor, who also played Judy Mallett in Coronation Street from 1995 to 1999, shared her thoughts on the current state of soaps. With many shows, including Corrie, facing criticism for an increased focus on crime-driven plots, she acknowledged the industry's challenge. "It's very difficult because soaps are trying to cater to what viewers want," she said. "People now crave fast action, crime dramas, and true crime."
However, she cautioned against overdoing such content. "The world is a pretty horrific place at the moment, so giving people somewhere to escape to is essential. There's a really good balance to be had—you want those 'water cooler' moments too."
Behind the Scenes: A Family Atmosphere
Gaynor fondly remembered her time on Emmerdale as a collaborative and joyful experience. "To be honest, it's like a family," she said. "Everyone was very happy in their work, with great directors, writers, a good production team, and fab actors. We all wanted to make really good TV and have fun with it."
This insight into the show's supportive environment underscores why Emmerdale has remained a beloved staple of British television for decades.
