Fans of the razor-sharp gangster saga have been given their first electrifying glimpse of the upcoming Peaky Blinders film, as Netflix dropped a dramatic teaser on Christmas Eve. The preview unites two of Ireland's biggest acting talents, Cillian Murphy and Barry Keoghan, in the highly anticipated cinematic continuation, titled Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man.
A Troubled Return for Tommy Shelby
The 70-second trailer immediately plunges viewers back into the dark world of Tommy Shelby, portrayed once again by the Oscar-winning Murphy. A haunting voiceover poses the central question: "Whatever happened to Tommy Shelby? The famous gypsy gangster." The film finds Shelby emerging from a self-imposed exile against the tumultuous backdrop of the Second World War, seemingly a changed man. "I'm not that man any more," he declares, seen walking with his head bowed, clad in his iconic baker boy cap.
The teaser hints at a compelling mystery, with a female voice urging, "Tommy, you've got to come back." Meanwhile, audiences are also introduced to Barry Keoghan's new character, seen in a brief shot wearing a white vest that showcases an array of arm tattoos, promising a fresh and formidable presence in the Shelby universe.
Star-Studded Cast and Creative Team
This feature film serves as a direct sequel to the hit BBC drama, which charted the rise of the Birmingham-based Shelby crime family across six seasons, from the aftermath of the First World War to the end of American Prohibition. Alongside Murphy and Keoghan, the cast boasts an impressive blend of returning favourites and major new additions.
Returning cast members include Sophie Rundle as Ada Shelby, Stephen Graham as union convener Hayden Stagg, and Packy Lee as Johnny Dogs. They are joined by acclaimed newcomers such as Dune star Rebecca Ferguson and Reservoir Dogs icon Tim Roth.
The project is helmed by director Tom Harper and written by the series' creator, Steven Knight, who is also set to pen the next James Bond film, ensuring a pedigree of gripping storytelling.
Release Dates and Future of the Franchise
Mark your calendars: Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man will premiere in cinemas on 6 March 2025, before becoming available for streaming globally on Netflix from 20 March 2025.
This film is not the end of the road for the franchise. In a separate announcement last October, the BBC confirmed that Peaky Blinders will return for two new television series, focusing on a "new generation of Shelbys." This spin-off will be set in 1953, years after the events of the forthcoming film, and will be filmed at the new Digbeth Loc Studios in Birmingham. Cillian Murphy is confirmed to return as an executive producer, though it is not yet known if he will reprise his iconic role on screen.
The original series, which first aired on BBC Two in 2013, became a global phenomenon after being picked up by Netflix, catapulting Murphy and co-stars like Tom Hardy to international fame and even sparking a resurgence in flat cap fashion. The upcoming film promises to be a major event for the show's legions of dedicated followers.
