EastEnders' Chrissie Watts star Tracy-Ann Oberman names two co-stars she loves being back with
EastEnders star reveals emotional return and favourite reunions

EastEnders actress Tracy-Ann Oberman has spoken candidly about her powerful and emotional return to the BBC soap, reprising her iconic role as the villainous Chrissie Watts.

An Emotional Albert Square Reunion

The 59-year-old star, who originally left the show in 2005 when her character was sentenced to 20 years for murdering her husband Den Watts, made a brief return in September 2024. Her comeback was kept tightly under wraps, culminating in a dramatic festive storyline set to unfold this Christmas on Albert Square.

Oberman described the experience as an "absolute joy", reserving special praise for her reunions with two fellow actresses. "Being back in The Queen Vic with Michelle and Kim was really emotional," she revealed, referring to Michelle Ryan, who plays Zoe Slater, and Kim Medcalf, who portrays Sam Mitchell.

"We kept hugging each other and discussing how a lifetime had passed since we were last together," Oberman explained, noting they shared photos of their children and caught up on two decades of life changes.

A Christmas Return to Wreak Havoc

Chrissie Watts's return is set to be explosive. Recently spotted plotting with Jasmine, revealed as Zoe Slater's secret daughter, Chrissie has also been unmasked as the mystery stalker who harassed Zoe for three months following her own return to Walford in June.

Oberman expressed delight at her character's festive comeback, stating: "I love the idea of her returning at Christmas to create havoc. Who wouldn't want to be part of the storyline on Christmas Day in Albert Square, particularly when it's Chrissie."

The actress, also known for her role in Friday Night Dinner, shed light on Chrissie's motivations. She believes her character "jumped" at the chance to torment Zoe Slater, holding a grudge from their shared past. "In her mind, Zoe never really paid for Den's murder," Oberman explained.

Revisiting a Notorious Past

Chrissie Watts's original exit remains one of EastEnders' most memorable moments. In 2005, she was imprisoned for killing her husband Den, whose body she hid under the floor of the Queen Vic's barrel store with help from Sam Mitchell and Zoe Slater.

She maintained a facade for months afterwards, living with Den's adoptive daughter Sharon and his son Dennis Rickman. Sam Mitchell was initially framed for the murder after drunkenly unearthing the body during a wedding celebration. Chrissie was finally arrested in December 2005 when Phil and Grant Mitchell returned to free their sister.

Reflecting on the show's strengths, Oberman said her return was "a reminder of what EastEnders does best. Strong female characters, in dynamic storylines, working together to create the drama." She confirmed that what began as a game for Chrissie has now become an obsession, driven by her twisted sense of justice and desire to make Zoe take responsibility.
