Danielle Harold Rules Out Soap Return After EastEnders Exit

EastEnders Alum Danielle Harold Closes Door on Soap Opera Comeback

Former EastEnders actress Danielle Harold has firmly ruled out the possibility of joining another soap opera, years after her emotional departure from the long-running BBC series. The 33-year-old star, best known for her portrayal of Lola Pearce from 2011 to 2023, has opened up about her career shift, expressing a desire to explore new avenues in television beyond the demanding world of soaps.

Reflecting on a Transformative Role and Heartbreaking Exit

Danielle Harold's character, Lola Pearce, was introduced as the granddaughter of Billy Mitchell, played by Perry Fenwick. Lola quickly became a fan favorite, known for her rebellious spirit and outspoken nature. Her storyline took dramatic turns, including a pregnancy in 2012 with Ben Mitchell's baby, leading to the birth of Lexi in a live episode that same year. After a stint away from Albert Square in Newcastle, Lola returned to London in 2019, rekindling her relationship with Jay Brown, portrayed by Jamie Borthwick.

The narrative reached a poignant climax in 2022 when Lola was diagnosed with a brain tumour, later revealed to be incurable. Harold's performance during this period was widely praised for its emotional depth, as Lola fought to make every day count before her tragic death in 2023, surrounded by Jay and Lexi. This intense and powerful storyline left a lasting impact on viewers and the actress alike.

Embracing a Break and New Opportunities

In a recent interview, Danielle Harold shared insights into her post-EastEnders journey. She emphasized the need for a break after the heavy storyline, stating, 'I took a little minute after I left EastEnders. I did the jungle, which was so much fun as well. I just took a little break because the storyline was so heavy and, obviously, I’ve played that character for such a long time.' Since her exit, she has appeared on ITV's I'm A Celebrity and Celebrity Hunted, showcasing her versatility.

Harold confirmed she is now 'kind of getting back to auditions' but is steering clear of soap operas. She expressed interest in projects that offer a complete story arc, such as TV series, and exploring documentary work. 'I’d love to do a series, where you get the whole story in one. And I’d also love to do a documentary, actually, something a bit different I’d love to do,' she explained. This shift reflects her appreciation for the creative freedom that comes with moving between diverse roles.

Why Soap Opera Life Is No Longer on the Agenda

When asked if loyalty to EastEnders influenced her decision, Harold clarified, 'It’s not that [I’m too loyal to EastEnders]. It’s just more, it’s so hard work. Soap is…actors in soap, oh my gosh, take my hat off. Like, it’s such a hard job. And, yeah, I like the freedom a little bit of being able to move from job to job.' Her comments highlight the rigorous demands of soap opera production, which often involves fast-paced filming schedules and evolving storylines.

As the entertainment industry continues to evolve, Danielle Harold is poised to carve out a new path, focusing on roles that allow for greater artistic expression and variety. Fans can anticipate seeing her in future TV series and documentary projects, as she steps away from the soap genre that defined her early career.
