Coronation Street's Gareth Pierce warns Todd faces 'doubly trapped' hell in Corriedale
Corrie star warns Todd is 'doubly trapped' in abuse plot

Gareth Pierce, the actor behind Coronation Street's Todd Grimshaw, has confirmed his character's harrowing ordeal is set to intensify, leaving him feeling 'doubly trapped' in a cycle of abuse. The revelation came during the premiere event for the upcoming Corriedale crossover special, which will unite the casts of ITV's Coronation Street and Emmerdale.

A Descent into Utter Hell

Todd Grimshaw's life on the cobbles is currently described as utter hell. He remains ensnared in a terrifying relationship with the manipulative and violent Theo Silverton, played by James Cartwright. Theo's campaign of coercive control has systematically broken Todd down, isolating him from his friends and support network.

What began with subtle manipulation and attempts to control Todd's movements has escalated into physical violence, infidelity, and psychological torture. A recent special episode, filmed through the unsettling perspective of security and bodycam footage, laid bare the grim reality of Todd's existence.

The Fight Back and Its Consequences

The shocking discovery that Theo was tracking his every move finally spurred Todd to fight back, leading him to demand Theo leave. In a furious confrontation, Theo goaded Todd into a physical struggle. When Todd pushed him away, Theo fell and hit his head on a coffee table, knocking himself unconscious and resulting in his arrest.

In a cruel twist, the master manipulator Theo successfully convinced Todd that the entire incident was his fault. Now, Todd is jobless, cut off from his main supporters—Billy Mayhew, George Shuttleworth, and Sarah Platt—and is even suspected by the police of being the abuser. Gareth Pierce confirmed that this moment truly represents rock bottom for his character.

'Doubly Trapped' and the Corriedale Carnage

Speaking on December 17, 2025, Pierce reflected on Todd's predicament. 'They don’t always tell us the full arc of a story like this,' he said, 'so as an actor, you’ve got to sometimes try to work out when rock bottom might be. I did feel like that was maybe in last night’s episode.'

On Todd's ill-fated attempt to stand up to Theo, Pierce added, 'Obviously what’s very sad is that in that moment where he fights back... the situation actually gets worse and Todd’s maybe doubly trapped now.'

The actor also expressed his excitement for the Corriedale event, which is set to feature a mammoth car pile-up threatening the lives of characters from both soaps. 'It was super exciting,' he said, comparing it to iconic stunts like the Corrie tram crash and Emmerdale plane crash. 'We’re actually giving you a whole new crash and crisis of their collective own!'

While coy on specifics, Pierce revealed Todd has a slightly easier time during the chaos than some. 'Todd is initially unconscious in the immediate aftermath, so I could start slow and easy, really,' he joked, mentioning a challenge involving not reacting to an explosion because his character was knocked out.

The star-studded cast for Corriedale includes numerous icons from both Coronation Street and Emmerdale, ensuring the crossover will be a landmark event in British television history.
