Hulu Scraps Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot, Sarah Michelle Gellar Reveals
In a disappointing turn for fans, Sarah Michelle Gellar has officially announced that Hulu will not proceed with the highly anticipated reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The Disney-owned streaming platform has decided to cancel the planned sequel, dashing hopes for a revival of the iconic 90s supernatural fantasy series.
Reboot Plans and Director Involvement
Last year, reports surfaced that the series would return as Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, with Gellar reprising her role as Buffy Summers. The project was set to be helmed by Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao, known for films such as Nomadland, Eternals, and Hamnet. However, Gellar confirmed over the weekend that these plans have been shelved.
Gellar's Emotional Announcement
In a heartfelt video posted on Instagram, the 48-year-old actress expressed her sadness at the news, stating, "I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy New Sunnydale." She extended gratitude to Zhao, noting that the director reminded her of her deep connection to the character and the show's enduring legacy among fans.
Iconic Series Legacy
The original teen drama, which aired from 1997 to 2003 for seven seasons, followed Buffy as she balanced high school life with battling vampires, demons, and other supernatural threats. The series featured a talented cast including Alyson Hannigan, Charisma Carpenter, and the late Michelle Trachtenberg, contributing to its cult status and lasting impact on television.
Gellar signed off her announcement with a nod to one of the show's most memorable lines, saying, "I promise, if the apocalypse actually comes, you could still beep me." Hulu has not provided additional comments on the cancellation, leaving fans to mourn the loss of this potential revival.
