AI-Generated Val Kilmer to Star in New Film One Year After Actor's Death
Val Kilmer, the iconic Top Gun star who passed away from pneumonia in 2025, is set to make a groundbreaking posthumous appearance in the upcoming action-adventure film As Deep As The Grave. This marks the first-ever performance enabled by generative artificial intelligence in cinematic history, according to production company First Line Films.
Historic AI Performance Approved by Estate
Kilmer was originally cast in the film five years ago but was unable to work on set due to illness. He will portray Father Fintan, a Catholic priest and Native American spiritualist, a role that resonated deeply with Kilmer, who claimed Cherokee ancestry and was a vocal advocate for Native American rights. The filmmakers have collaborated closely with Kilmer's estate and his daughter, Mercedes, ensuring ethical approval for this innovative approach.
In a press release, First Line Films stated: "At the time that he was cast, Kilmer expressed that the character of Fintan spoke to him both culturally and spiritually." The company, based in New Mexico, has utilized state-of-the-art generative AI technology to recreate Kilmer's performance, though specific technical details remain undisclosed.
Film Details and Cast
Written and directed by Coloradan filmmaker Coerte Voorhees, As Deep As The Grave follows southwestern archaeologists Ann Morris, played by Tin Star actress Abigail Lawrie, and Harry Potter star Tom Felton. The narrative centers on their excavations in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona, while exploring the lives and culture of the Navajo people. The film is currently in post-production and is scheduled for release later this year.
Notably, the AI-generated performance will use Kilmer's voice from after his tracheostomy, a procedure he underwent for throat cancer that permanently damaged his vocal cords. In 2021, Kilmer had previously employed the AI voice platform Sonantic to develop an AI version of his voice, which was featured in the Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, where he reprised his legendary Iceman role.
Kilmer's Legacy and Industry Impact
California-born Val Kilmer was one of the highest-paid actors of the 1990s, renowned for roles such as Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky in Top Gun, Batman in Batman Forever, and Jim Morrison in The Doors, the latter earning him critical acclaim. Despite his success, Kilmer had a reputation for being difficult to work with, often clashing with directors, and famously admitted reluctance to take the Top Gun role that catapulted him to fame.
This AI-driven project arrives amid ongoing debates in the entertainment industry regarding artificial intelligence. Last year, the launch of the first fully AI-generated actor, Tilly Norwood, sparked significant controversy. In the United States, SAG-AFTRA, the actors' union, recently concluded a month of negotiations with major studios without reaching a new deal on AI protections. Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, Equity union members overwhelmingly voted to refuse digital scanning on set to secure adequate safeguards against AI exploitation.
The AI debate has also extended to the music sector, with the UK government abandoning plans earlier this week to allow AI firms to use music without permission, highlighting widespread concerns over technological advancements threatening creative professions.
