Tracy Crisp's Journey of Love and Resilience

In a heartfelt personal account, Tracy Crisp shares the profound story of her marriage to Adrian, a relationship that has spanned decades and weathered numerous life challenges. From their youthful beginnings to navigating family crises and international relocations, their bond has been a constant source of safety and excitement.

The Early Days: A Foundation of Authenticity

Tracy met Adrian when she was just 18 years old, and they married five years later at age 23. She recalls falling in love with him because he made her laugh, demonstrated intelligence, and looked good in football shorts. However, what truly stood out was the absence of pretense between them from the very start. Adrian has always been a "what you see is what you get" person, taking everyone at face value. This authenticity allowed Tracy to feel genuinely loved for who she was, without having to second-guess his expectations.

During this formative period of her life, when Tracy was actively seeking her place in the world, falling in love with Adrian and planning their future together felt both secure and thrilling. This dual sensation of safety and excitement became a defining characteristic of their relationship.

Navigating Life's Storms

In her 30s, Tracy experienced a concentrated series of traumatic events within just a few short years. These included complicated childbirths, a baby's surgery, secondary infertility, as well as cancer, death, and dementia within her family. The emotional weight was immense. Shortly after settling her grandfather into aged care and delivering a eulogy at her father's funeral, Adrian returned home with news of a job offer in Abu Dhabi.

Travel has consistently played a pivotal role in defining their relationship. The day after their 1992 wedding, they embarked on an open-ended backpacking trip, having always dreamed of living overseas with children. In 2009, Tracy packed up their third home in six months—following moves from her childhood home and her grandfather's residence—and the family relocated to the desert city, a twelve-hour flight away. A few weeks after arriving, Tracy celebrated her 40th birthday, receiving a simple silver ring and matching pendant from Adrian.

Emotional Collapse and Reassurance

Whether the move to Abu Dhabi was the tipping point or Tracy was headed for an emotional collapse regardless remains unclear. Nevertheless, her first year there was marked by panic attacks in supermarkets and sleepless nights staring out from their 17th-floor apartment. One evening, while going through bedtime routines with their young children, Tracy began crying uncontrollably without an identifiable cause. Filled with fear that this state might be permanent, she asked Adrian if this was her new reality.

Adrian reassured her that he had known her for a long time and that this phase would not last forever. His words, "It's OK," did not diminish her current pain but allowed her to believe in the future he could envision. This moment of profound support became a cornerstone of their relationship during difficult times.

Separation and Reunion

In 2016, the couple decided that Tracy would return to Australia with the children while Adrian remained in Abu Dhabi until securing a job back home. This separation lasted nearly two years and proved profoundly challenging, yet it also enriched their relationship. Tracy regained a sense of autonomy, and after the prolonged absence, they never again took each other's presence for granted.

Tracy's creative practice as a writer and performer lacks traditional measures of success, sometimes leading her to envy Adrian's stable engineering career. However, she cherishes how her work creates unexpected opportunities for collaboration. Adrian contributes by building sets, managing front-of-house duties, delivering lunches during tech runs, and providing endless emotional support. He even serves as the good-natured straight man for many of her jokes.

Future Plans and Symbolic Rings

During the rocky preparation for her most recent solo show, Tracy thanked Adrian for his unwavering support, acknowledging she had been difficult to work with. He responded with genuine relish, "I love it." Looking ahead, Tracy has ambitious plans for their 60s: when Adrian retires within the next decade, they aim to tour her shows across regional Australia, with her writing and performing while Adrian works as a full-time roadie.

On a recent holiday, Tracy humorously dubbed Adrian an "Influencer Husband," tasking him with taking photos of her and offering compliments. When she posted these images online, several people noticed the ring she was wearing—the same silver ring Adrian gave her for her 40th birthday. Interestingly, Tracy does not wear her wedding ring, having always felt ambivalent about marriage itself. Yet, that simple silver ring, gifted during a time when she was at her "messiest and darkest" while living far from home, has been worn every day since as a testament to their enduring connection.
