The Traitors Abandons Secret Traitor Twist After Fan Backlash
The BBC's popular reality competition The Traitors is set to permanently remove the controversial secret Traitor twist after just one series. The fourth season of the show, which aired recently, introduced this divisive new element to the game, but producers have now confirmed it was a one-time experiment.
How the Secret Traitor Twist Worked
In the premiere episode, host Claudia Winkleman selected three Traitors whose identities were revealed to viewers, alongside a secret fourth Traitor kept hidden for the initial episodes. This twist added layers of complexity with new rules, such as the secret Traitor providing a kill list to the main group, leading to repeated murder attempts on contestant Maz. It also injected mystery into the post-roundtable reveals, a segment often criticized by all-knowing viewers as tedious.
Producer Insights on the Decision
Stephen Lambert, head of production company Studio Lambert, discussed the twist at an industry event at the University of East Anglia in Norfolk. He explained that the secret Traitor was introduced to differentiate the civilian version from the celebrity spin-off, which had just aired to rave reviews and high ratings. "We introduced the idea of a secret Traitor as a way of doing something that was different, but it wasn't something we wanted to keep going with," Lambert said, according to entertainment website IGN.
Lambert emphasized the importance of format familiarity, stating, "A good format is designed so people feel a sense of familiarity, which is why they keep coming back to watch it." He noted that while variation is necessary—through cast changes and minor tweaks—the secret Traitor twist proved problematic. "Other shows have done similar things where the audience didn't know who the mole was, and the trouble is you're completely a victim of the edit, which doesn't feel very satisfying," he added.
Impact Across Versions
The twist was implemented in both the UK and US versions of the show. In the US, the secret Traitor was Donna, mother of NFL star Travis Kelce, while in the UK, it was revealed to be Fiona, a 62-year-old local government officer who played a giddy and scatterbrained character. Her identity was only disclosed after contestant Hugo was eliminated from the roundtable.
Future of The Traitors
Looking ahead, Celebrity Traitors is scheduled to return on the BBC in 2026, with the regular civilian version set for a comeback in 2027. Producers assure fans that the core format remains robust and engaging without the need for such drastic twists. This decision reflects a broader trend in reality TV, where balancing innovation with viewer comfort is key to long-term success.
