Emmerdale Star Chris Coghill Confirms Exit Ahead of Historic Corrie Crossover
Emmerdale's Chris Coghill confirms soap exit

In a major shake-up for the Dales, Emmerdale star Chris Coghill has confirmed his exit from the ITV soap. The actor, who plays the complex character Kev Townsend, announced his departure on social media, sending shockwaves through the fanbase just weeks before the show's historic first-ever crossover with Coronation Street.

A Social Media Farewell

Coghill, a former EastEnders actor, took to Instagram on January 5, 2026 to share the news with followers. Alongside a clip of his final scene, which has already aired, he wrote: ‘Right. In a bit Emmerdale’. He added a heartfelt message of thanks, saying: ‘Thanks for all the love for Kev’.

The post prompted an immediate outpouring from his co-stars. Bradley Riches, who plays Kev's unknowing son Lewis Barton, commented emotionally: ‘MISS YOU DAD XX’. Meanwhile, Aaron Dingle actor Danny Miller hinted at fan-led efforts to reverse the decision, writing: ‘I’m gonna start a petition’.

Kev Townsend's Dramatic Journey

Kev Townsend first arrived in the village as the secret husband of Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley), instantly throwing the popular 'Robron' pairing into turmoil. His mission to win back Robert led to intensely dramatic storylines, culminating last year in a hostage situation where he held both Robert and Aaron at swordpoint before fleeing.

After a surprise return at Christmas, Kev found himself captured by the villainous John Sugden. Ultimately, realising Robert had moved on for good, he made a quiet exit from the village. A significant loose end remains, however, as his son Lewis still has no idea Kev is his father.

Fan Reaction and What's Next

Audience perception of Kev evolved significantly from his divisive introduction. Many fans grew to love the character, with some expressing a desire to see him settle into village life. One fan on X (formerly Twitter) said in November: ‘I would really love Chris back as Kev. I want to see him baking cakes with Claudette, bickering with Nicola and Liam, and awkwardly doting on Lewis’.

This departure sets the stage for the unprecedented Corriedale crossover episode, which promises a high-stakes car crash bringing characters from both ITV soaps together. With secrets set to be exposed and lives on the line, Kev's exit marks the end of one era and the tense beginning of another.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV1 and is available to stream from 6am on ITVX.
