Programming Chaos as BBC Steps In
As the clock struck 11am AEDT, ABC's news channel abruptly switched to BBC broadcasts, while radio networks filled airwaves with classical music, pop hits, and pre-recorded content. The dramatic shift followed warnings to audiences that the ABC would look "a bit different" during the strike period.
Triple J made a particularly pointed statement by signing off with NWA's "Express Yourself," a song the station had played 82 consecutive times in 1990 in response to ABC censorship. Not all ABC journalists participated in the strike. Former AM presenter Sabra Lane, now based in Hobart as a reporter and weekend presenter for ABC News Tasmania, chose to continue working.
