Tesla's Q2 Earnings Miss Expectations

Tesla reported its second-quarter earnings on Wednesday, revealing profits far lower than analysts had anticipated. The company posted earnings of 31 cents per share, falling short of the 51 cents per share predicted by Wall Street. Revenue came in at $28.23bn, exceeding the expected $25.71bn. Shares fell over 3% in after-hours trading following the release.

Stock Decline Amid Broader Challenges

Tesla's stock, already down about 14% year-to-date, dipped further after the earnings report. The automaker faces headwinds including the end of US electric vehicle tax subsidies last year and increased competition from cheaper Chinese manufacturers. Meanwhile, Elon Musk's other venture, SpaceX, had the largest stock market debut in history last month, though its shares have since fallen about 26% from their peak.

Shift Towards Robotics and AI

Tesla's vehicle sales are becoming less central to its market performance as the company pivots to robotics, autonomous driving, and AI. Musk has touted the Optimus robot as the "biggest product ever," though it has not entered widespread production and faces Chinese competitors. On the earnings call, Musk cautioned that creating an autonomous human robot is "one of the hardest things to solve."

Robotaxi Expansion

Tesla's driverless taxi service, Robotaxi, is a key focus for new revenue. The company announced it would expand to Tampa and Orlando, with service currently available in parts of Austin, Dallas, Houston, and Miami. Musk claimed the service would have "almost infinite demand," but rollout has been slow. Only about 50 Robotaxis operate in Austin. Musk attributed the slow growth to safety concerns, stating, "We're going as fast as humanly possible in scaling Robotaxi, but while trying to ensure that we do not harm anyone at all."
