Shinji Mikami's Unbound Games Reveals Plans for New Original AAA Console Game
Renowned video game director Shinji Mikami, the creative force behind the iconic Resident Evil series, is actively recruiting for his newly established studio, Unbound Games. The studio is currently developing an original intellectual property (IP) designed for consoles and PC, marking a significant return for Mikami to the gaming industry.
A Legacy of Horror and Innovation
Shinji Mikami is widely celebrated for his groundbreaking work at Capcom, where he directed the original Resident Evil in 1996, alongside other hits like Dino Crisis and Resident Evil 4. In 2010, he founded Tango Gameworks, leading development on titles such as The Evil Within in 2014 and producing the acclaimed Hi-Fi Rush. Mikami departed Tango Gameworks in 2023, leaving fans and industry observers curious about his next venture.
Unbound Games: A Fully Independent Studio
Unbound Games was officially established in May 2023, with Mikami serving as representative director. According to the studio's recruitment materials, it is described as a fully independent company focused on creating original AAA titles. The studio aims to develop a diverse range of games, from high-end consumer experiences to smaller, innovative projects, targeting gamers both in Japan and globally.
Based on job listings, Unbound Games is utilizing Unreal Engine 5 to craft a high-end title for PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC platforms. As of April 2025, the studio employs 53 individuals, including veterans from prestigious franchises like Silent Hill, Shadow Of The Colossus, Sonic The Hedgehog, Ōkami, and Dead Rising.
Insights from Key Developers
Masato Kimura, a notable developer at Unbound Games who previously collaborated with Mikami on Hi-Fi Rush and Devil May Cry, and produced Ghostwire: Tokyo, provided some hints about the studio's debut project. In an interview, Kimura stated that while details remain confidential, the game is a AAA title for high-end consumers. He emphasized that the studio is aiming for AAA quality with AA content, focusing on delivering a rich, immersive gaming experience without the massive budgets and teams typical of overseas AAA productions.
It remains unclear whether Shinji Mikami will direct this project, but in 2020, he expressed a desire to direct one more video game before retiring. In recent years, Mikami has indicated a wish to move beyond his reputation primarily for horror games, though his current stance on this matter is unknown.
Unbound Games' emergence signals a promising new chapter in the gaming industry, blending Mikami's legendary expertise with fresh, independent creativity. As development progresses, anticipation builds for what could be another landmark title from one of gaming's most influential figures.
