Leapmotor B10 Review: A Value-Focused Electric SUV Making Waves

Leapmotor, a Chinese automotive brand, made headlines last summer by introducing its own EV grant shortly after the UK Government announced the official Electric Car Grant. This strategic move sparked a remarkable surge in interest, with inquiries skyrocketing by an incredible 2,675 percent, leading to the rapid sell-out of its larger C10 electric SUV model.

Now, Leapmotor aims to replicate this success with the launch of the smaller B10, positioned as a direct rival to the Skoda Elroq. Thanks to a £1,500 'Leap-Grant', the B10 starts from just £29,995, offering compelling value in the competitive electric vehicle market.

More Bang for Your Buck Compared to Competitors

For a spacious electric SUV equipped with a 67.1kWh battery delivering a range of 270 miles, the B10's price point is exceptionally competitive. In comparison, the Skoda Elroq starts at nearly £32,000 for a version with a 37-mile shorter range. To match the Leapmotor B10's range, consumers would need to spend over £33,500 on a Skoda, highlighting the B10's status as a genuine bargain.

However, the question remains: is it a good car? Previous reviews of the C10 model raised concerns, resulting in a below-par 2.5-star rating. Leapmotor has demonstrated a capacity for rapid learning, promising improvements, particularly in the ADAS driving assistance system, which has been refined for better UK compatibility on both the C10 and the new B10.

Fully Loaded Specification as Standard

The Leapmotor B10 test vehicles, showcased in rainy Chippenham, featured modern paint options like the free Starry Night Blue or the attractive Dawn Purple (£575). With only six colour choices and two interior shades, Leapmotor emphasises simplicity in its offerings.

In the UK, only the top-spec model is available, priced at £29,995 post-grant. This version comes generously equipped with standard features including 18-inch alloy wheels, electric heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a heat pump, an electric tailgate, and a 14.6-inch touchscreen supporting apps like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon, Spotify, Tidal, Deezer, YouTube, and TikTok.

Build quality is impressive, with tight panel gaps and lustrous paint finishes. Inside, while plastics may not reach premium levels, soft-touch materials in key areas create a welcoming atmosphere. The seats are comfortable, though the front seat base lacks height adjustability, feeling somewhat flat. Climate control functionality and good all-round visibility enhance the driving experience.

Performance and Driving Dynamics

With 215hp and a 0-62mph time of 8.0 seconds, the B10 delivers adequate performance. The suspension is tuned for comfort, which can lead to a wallowy feel on undulating roads, but it provides a cushioned ride once settled. Handling is neutral with good grip, thanks to upgraded Nexen tyres insisted upon by the UK MD, replacing earlier cheap Chinese-made options.

Noise levels are low, with the cabin remaining hushed at city speeds and motorway driving. The interior feels solid, free from creaks or rattles. However, the ADAS system can be intrusive, requiring separate disabling in the menu each time the car is started—a minor frustration that could be improved with over-the-air updates.

Practicality and Efficiency

Rear-seat space is vast, offering abundant legroom and a light, airy feel due to the large panoramic roof and flat floor. The boot measures 430 litres, with a high floor making it appear smaller, but a 25-litre 'frunk' provides additional storage. Efficiency is commendable, achieving 3.7 miles per kWh on a cold, wet test route.

Verdict: A Significant Improvement

The Leapmotor B10 won't thrill driving enthusiasts, but it delivers reassuring EV motoring for budget-conscious buyers. With a four-year warranty and roadside assistance, it promises a worry-free ownership experience. While the C10 earned 2.5 stars, the B10 deserves 3.5 stars, marking a notable leap forward for Leapmotor in less than a year. This emerging value brand is certainly one to watch with interest in the evolving electric vehicle landscape.
