Mother Mash to open Notting Hill pie and mash restaurant
Mother Mash opens Notting Hill pie and mash restaurant

Mother Mash, a self-proclaimed specialist in British comfort food, is opening a new restaurant in Notting Hill. The company, which already operates venues in Carnaby Street and Covent Garden, will launch a site on Westbourne Park Road, just off Portobello Road Market.

The menu features freshly made mashed potatoes paired with gourmet pies or sausages. Pie fillings range from steak and stout to woodland mushroom and ale, while mash options include cheesy, sweet potato, and horseradish varieties. Diners can also choose from beers, wines, ciders, and soft drinks.

Pricing and menu details

A pie with mash is likely to cost £16, while sausages and mash are available for around £15. Sides such as buttered cabbage and cauliflower cheese range between £2.95 and £3.95, keeping full meals under £20. The restaurant will operate from 8am to 10.30pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 10.30pm on Sundays, with alcohol sales permitted between 12pm and 10.30pm.

Licensing approval and objections

The new restaurant was granted a licence by a Kensington and Chelsea Licensing Sub-Committee last Thursday, September 24. During the hearing, the sub-committee heard several objections from members of the public who opposed the hours of operation and takeaway services. One objector said, “I don’t really understand people going and buying sausage and mash at 9 o'clock in the morning.”

Mother Mash agreed to a later start to alcohol sales but held firm on operating hours. Councillors decided to grant the licence, along with conditions including table service only for alcohol sales. A full reasoned decision will be sent by the council to all parties as soon as possible.

Impact on the local area

The new Notting Hill location will add to Mother Mash's existing presence in central London, bringing its British comfort food offerings to a new neighbourhood near Portobello Road Market. The licence conditions aim to address community concerns about late-night operations and alcohol service, balancing business interests with local residents' expectations.
