Walkers ditches crisp packets for new tubes, shoppers divided
Walkers new crisp tubes spark mixed reactions from shoppers

Walkers has introduced a new packaging format for its MAX and Doritos crisps, swapping traditional packets for 140g square-shaped tubes. The move has sparked a mixed reaction from shoppers, with some eager to try the new format while others question the value for money.

New tube packaging hits UK shelves

The new tubes were spotted by food blogger @newfoodsuk on Instagram, who shared a photo of the products found in a UK convenience store. They are also being sold at TG Jones (formerly WH Smith) for £2.99 and at SPAR for £1.95. Flavours include Paprika for Walkers MAX and Jalapeno & Cheese, while Doritos offers Tangy Cheese and Chilli Heatwave.

Both brands are owned by PepsiCo, which also owns Doritos, explaining the simultaneous launch. The tubes are part of a broader trend in snack packaging, moving away from traditional bags to more rigid containers.

Shoppers voice concerns over size and price

Social media users have been quick to comment on the new packaging. @repthelonestar wrote: 'New packaging, less crisps. Oh what a surprise,' while @dead4ever_uk noted: '140g if that's replacing the bags that were 200g now 180g.' Another user, @mary.monk.art, added: 'In boxes so they can distract you from the fact that you get almost 1/3 less than in a packet.'

The price has also drawn criticism, with @eat.crisps proclaiming: 'Woah! That's pricey for 140g!' The tubes are priced at £2.99 at TG Jones, which some shoppers consider steep for the amount of product.

SPAR Scotland highlights the launch

A SPAR store in Dalbeattie, Scotland, took to Facebook to share a closer look at the crisps, noting they had been 'causing a stir'. The post read: 'The brand new Doritos/Walkers tubs have officially landed at SPAR Scotland Dalbeattie! These are already causing a stir, so don't hang about if you want to get your hands on them!'

Metro has contacted Walkers for comment on the packaging change and the concerns raised by consumers.

Other new food launches this week

Walkers isn't the only brand unveiling new products. Cadbury has released Christmas chocolates, including Smash Baubles and Biscoff-filled Baubles, but fans were quick to point out their resemblance to Easter eggs. @emj_pgh wrote: 'Repurposed, relabelled left over Easter egg, anyone?' while @rootinhooton said: 'Basically an Easter egg.'

Nestlé has also introduced Milkybar Caramel Crunch, featuring caramel-flavoured white chocolate with crunchy biscuit pieces. Meanwhile, McDonald's has launched its first-ever Crocs Happy Meal in the UK, exciting fans across the country.
