A new survey has found that one in three Britons have saved money by 'show traveling'—opting for a cheaper trip abroad instead of a UK staycation. The trend, driven by the cost-of-living crisis, has helped holidaymakers save an average of £350 per person.

Show traveling involves booking a holiday abroad that costs less than a comparable staycation in the UK. According to the survey by travel company TravelSupermarket, 33% of Brits have tried this approach. The research, which polled 2,000 UK adults, found that the main motivation was financial: 42% said they wanted to save money, while 28% cited better value for money abroad.
Savings and Destinations
The average saving per person was £350, with some reporting savings of up to £1,000. Popular destinations for show travelers include Spain, Portugal, and Greece, where accommodation and dining are often cheaper than in UK hotspots like Cornwall or the Lake District. The survey also revealed that 22% of respondents had switched from a UK break to an overseas trip specifically to cut costs.

Emma Coulthurst, travel commentator at TravelSupermarket, said: 'The cost-of-living crisis has made people more savvy about their spending, and show traveling is a smart way to get a holiday without breaking the bank.' She added that the trend is likely to continue as household budgets remain tight.

The survey also found that 45% of Brits are planning to take a holiday abroad in the next 12 months, with 68% saying they are looking for deals and discounts. Meanwhile, 27% said they would consider a staycation if they could find a bargain. The findings highlight a shift in travel behavior, with value for money becoming the top priority for many.
