A supermarket own-brand butter has been declared the best in the UK, outperforming the premium Danish favourite Lurpak in a rigorous blind taste test. The surprising result offers a festive boost for budget-conscious shoppers looking for quality without the high price tag.
The Champion and the Challengers
Consumer watchdog Which? conducted the study, asking a panel of 67 people to rate eight spreadable butters from major supermarkets alongside Lurpak. The test focused on products made with a blend of butter and vegetable oil, similar to Lurpak's composition.
Aldi's Nordpak emerged as the clear winner, scoring 75% and securing both a 'Best Buy' and 'Great Value' endorsement from Which?. Tasters praised its creaminess, colour, and well-rounded flavour. Crucially, at just £2.18 for a 500g tub, it was one of the cheapest options, costing a mere 44p per 100g.
In second place was M&S Lightly Salted Butter Blend with a score of 74%, also awarded a Best Buy. It impressed with its flavour and texture and had the highest butter content of all spreads tested. However, at £2.30 for 250g (92p per 100g), it was significantly more expensive than the Aldi option.
Morrisons Salted Spreadable took third place with 73%, praised for its texture and coming in at £1.97 for 450g. The well-known brand Lurpak finished in fourth position with a score of 72%. While it scored well for appearance, flavour, and texture, it was the most expensive product tested, costing £4.75 for 400g when not on offer – that's £1.19 per 100g.
How the Other Supermarkets Fared
The full ranking from Which? provides a clear guide for shoppers. Following the top four, the results were:
- Ocado Lightly Salted Spreadable – 70% (£2.25 for 500g)
- Asda Spreadable Slightly Salted – 69% (£2.18 for 500g)
- Lidl Danpak Spreadable Slightly Salted – 66% (£2.18 for 500g)
- Tesco Butterpak Spreadable Slightly Salted – 64% (£2.18 for 500g)
- Waitrose Spreadable – 59% (£2.75 for 500g)
The Waitrose offering was the lowest scorer overall, with the panel finding it lacking in both flavour and creaminess.
Expert Verdict and Consumer Advice
Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, highlighted the practical benefits of a good spreadable butter. "A spreadable butter that can be used straight out of the fridge and without making a mess of your bread can save time and stress," she said.
She added, "We've churned through offerings from the main supermarkets and found Aldi's Nordpak is not only the tastiest tub on test, but also less than half the price of its branded counterpart."
The study, originally published in April 2025 with prices correct for December 2025, demonstrates that a premium taste experience does not require a premium spend. For Lurpak loyalists, some supermarkets like Tesco are offering pre-Christmas discounts, but the test proves formidable competition is waiting on the own-brand shelves.
