Lidl has officially opened its highly anticipated Stamford Hill branch, directly addressing community concerns about supermarket accessibility in the area. Shoppers were welcomed into the new store at 8am on February 19, marking the discount retailer's fourth location in Hackney.
Addressing Community Concerns Over Accessibility
Worries about local access to a major supermarket intensified when Sainsbury's vacated the site in February of last year. Hackney Mayor Caroline Woodley was compelled to publicly assure residents that the prominent corner premises would continue operating as a significant grocery store. The multi-million-pound refurbishment project commenced in October, transforming the former Sainsbury's space with substantial upgrades.
Substantial Investment and Job Creation
The comprehensive refit included constructing a dedicated in-store bakery and installing new bicycle racks to encourage sustainable transport. This development has generated approximately 40 new employment opportunities, with numerous customer assistant positions among the roles created. The opening coincides with Lidl's recent announcement to pay employees within the M25 area a minimum hourly wage of £14.80.
Store Features and Operating Hours
The new Stamford Hill Lidl will operate from 8am to 10pm Monday through Saturday, with Sunday hours from 10am to 4pm. The store features the popular 'Middle of Lidl' promotional aisle and comprehensive customer facilities, including accessible toilets equipped with baby-changing stations.
Strategic Expansion Amid Retail Vacancies
Lidl's expansion comes as other major retailers have withdrawn from the area. Sainsbury's closed its Stamford Hill location after the landlord opted for redevelopment following lease expiration. This followed the 2022 closure of a nearby Asda supermarket on Clapton Common, which the chain deemed no longer profitable.
The German discount supermarket is capitalizing on these vacancies with additional expansion plans. After years of speculation and planning delays, Lidl has submitted proposals to demolish the former JET service station on Lower Clapton Road and construct a two-storey building spanning 1,000 square meters.
Broader London Expansion Continues
Lidl's growth strategy extends beyond Hackney, with two additional London stores scheduled to open on February 26. New locations on Sutton High Street and Walworth Road will further strengthen the retailer's presence across the capital.
