British Couple Face 30 Years in Turkish Jail for Cannabis Smuggling
British Couple Face 30 Years in Turkey for Cannabis

A young British couple is facing up to 30 years in a Turkish prison after they allegedly attempted to smuggle two suitcases filled with cannabis. Holly Cooper and Taylor Johnson, both 20, were arrested at Istanbul Airport while transiting from Thailand to London. Their families claim the couple were beaten by Turkish police upon arrest.

Arrest and Legal Consequences

The couple was stopped on April 26 before boarding their connecting flight back to the UK. If convicted, they face a minimum sentence of 10 years, with a maximum of 30 years. They have been transferred to a jail facility ahead of their trial, which could take up to a year to commence. The families have launched a fundraiser to cover legal fees, as the couple does not have their own lawyers.

Fundraiser for Legal Support

A fundraiser organized by a family friend states: 'As many of you know Taylor was arrested in Turkey and we need to raise the funds to pay for his solicitor. To some it may be cheeky but if you was put in this position you would do anything to be able to raise the funds.' The couple had previously posted pictures from Gran Canaria in February and flew to Thailand last month before their ill-fated return journey.
