A tragic accident off the coast of Thailand has claimed the life of an 18-year-old woman after a speedboat packed with tourists collided with a fishing trawler and sank.
Chaos in the Andaman Sea
The incident occurred near Koh Gai Island in the Andaman Sea, close to the hugely popular tourist destination of Phuket. The vessel involved was the Korawich Marine 888, which was carrying 52 passengers and three crew members around the Phi-Phi Islands in the country's south-west.
Witnesses described scenes of panic as the boat, having smashed into the fishing trawler Pichai Samut 1, overturned and sank. The force of the collision was so severe it tore the front off the speedboat. Passengers were thrown into the water, with reports stating people were screaming and clinging to each other in a desperate struggle to stay afloat.
Casualties and Rescue Efforts
The young woman who died is believed to be a Russian national named Elizaveta S. At least a dozen other tourists sustained injuries in the crash. One woman was transported to hospital in a critical condition, while others received treatment for lesser harms.
Thai officials confirmed that the fishing trawler involved in the collision, the Pichai Samut 1, was not damaged. The focus of the emergency response was entirely on the passengers and crew of the tourist boat, who were all rescued from the water following the crash on January 11, 2026.
