Croydon residents are set for a festive treat as the popular budget pub chain JD Wetherspoon announces the opening of a grand new venue in time for the Christmas season. The new establishment forms a key part of the company's significant national expansion, which will see six new pubs opening across the UK.
A Historic Home for a Modern Pub
The Croydon branch will be situated in the historic Coombe Lodge, a building located roughly equidistant between New Addington and East Croydon. This is not just any building; Coombe Lodge is a Grade II listed red brick structure originally built in the 1760s. It was most recently operating as a Beefeater pub before closing its doors on September 2 this year. Wetherspoon's acquisition and refurbishment of such a characterful property is in line with its established strategy of giving each pub a unique design that reflects local history.
What to Expect on the Menu
While the specific food menu for the Croydon site is not yet accessible, Wetherspoon's menus are famously consistent across its estate. Patrons can reliably expect the chain's classic offering. This typically includes a variety of breakfast dishes served between 8am and noon, alongside a full menu of pub favourites available throughout the day. These heavier meals often encompass:
- Burgers and gourmet burgers
- Various chicken dishes, including grills and burgers
- Popular curries
- Wraps and sandwiches
- Other traditional pub classics
Part of a Major National Rollout
This opening is part of Wetherspoon's continued aggressive expansion across the country. The Croydon launch follows the recent opening of The Walham Green pub on Fulham Road on Tuesday, July 8. That venue, which cost the chain around £3 million, is housed in a former Edwardian baroque-style Tube station entrance built in 1910 on the site of the original 1880 station.
The company has confirmed a schedule of further openings in the coming weeks, each aiming to reflect the heritage of its building. The other upcoming Wetherspoons pubs are:
- The Emersons Green, Bristol - Wednesday, December 3
- The Red Anchor, Stockton-on-Tees - Wednesday, December 10
- Black Bear, Glasgow - Wednesday, December 17
- The Angel Inn, Wetherby - Tuesday, December 23
- The Chiltern, Beaconsfield - Tuesday, January 13
The arrival of a new Wetherspoon pub in Croydon's historic Coombe Lodge is poised to become a significant addition to the local hospitality scene, offering residents a familiar and affordable option in a building steeped in nearly 260 years of history.
